I. Title: CARTOGRAPHIC OUTREACH COORDINATOR Division: Location: Academic Affairs Department: Library Osher Map Library (OML) and Smith Center for Cartographic Education, Glickman Library, Portland Campus Schedule: Primarily weekday, with some evenings Organizational Relationships: Reports to: Osher Map Library Curator Supervises: Students, graduate assistants, interns, volunteers and docents Coordinates with: Osher Map Library staff, Faculty Scholar, other library personnel II. STATEMENT OF THE JOB: The Cartographic Outreach Coordinator (hereafter referred to as COC) participates broadly in the functioning of OML with a focus on providing cartographic related education programming to an audience ranging in age from K-12 students to retirees in lifelong learning programs. The interpretative programs that the COC develops and implements are primarily based on and integrated with OML’s special collections, resources and exhibitions and seek to promote spatial literacy. The COC position is a key component in OML’s initiative to increase its digital and regional presence. The COC coordinates closely with OML’s Curator in planning, development, and delivery of the educational outreach services to a broad ranging state, national and international audience. III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provides general assistance in the design, production, execution, and evaluation of OML’s outreach services and programs to three distinct constituencies: K-12 students; K-12 teachers; general public and senior lifelong learners 1. Responsible for OML’s outreach programs, services, activities, operations and functions. 2. Develops objectives, practices, and procedures, and helps to identify resources to ensure accomplishment of operational goals for Outreach Programs. 3. Coordinates day-to-day operations in order to achieve designated goals set with Curator. 4. Develops, implements and coordinates all aspects of interpretative programs, primarily based on OML’s collections. 5. Prepares and executes group tours and special events for the K-12 community. 6. Coordinates with curator in developing and conducting in-service workshops and re-certification courses for K-12 educators. 7. Develops, oversees and organizes outreach programs for the retiree community in conjunction with senior colleges and senior support programs. 8. Promotion of programs with print publications and web support: a. Drafts text, formats, and designs original promotional materials including: educational booklets and activities, posters, brochures, flyers, newsletters, and other related materials. b. Assists in maintaining and updating educational material and information on OML’s website. c. Create and manage promotional campaigns in support of overall outreach programming. 9. Curriculum Support and Development: a. Develops K-12 content for guided tour content, multiple visit programs, and pre- and postvisit curriculum materials. b. Creates and designs educational materials that integrate OML’s collections with statewide K-12 curriculum guidelines. c. Develops educational materials in both print and digital formats, using market-standard design software. d. Develops and executes cartographic centered curriculum for senior educational programs. e. Develops and directs transportable displays showcasing OML collections. 10. Develops a variety of reports to support grant applications and annual reports: a. Assists in researching and drafting grant proposals for OML Outreach Programs. b. Assists with administering outreach grants. c. Coordinates community programs, including drafting of program offerings, taking reservations, and assisting with set-up of events. Prepares and executes group tours and special events for the general public and other special interest organizations. Organizes, oversees, and conducts K-12 school group visits including managing reservations, bus assistance, coordinating docent coverage for guided tours, and setting up tour itineraries. Coordinates education database and mailing list; maintain attendee information for follow up prospect mailings. Coordinates site set-up for events, such as selecting and organizing materials for internal and external programs. Recommends K-12 publications and support materials such as reference books, software, games, and posters. Maintains inventory for supplies to support outreach programs and place orders as needed. SUPERVISORY and MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Organizes, trains and supervises support personnel who assist in implementing outreach projects. These include: student workers, graduate assistants, interns, volunteers, and docents. 2. Creates a training manual and effectively utilizes the time and talents of support personal. 3. Provides assessment and evaluation for all specialized training programs. 4. Implements best practices for training program. 5. Maintains collection security in absence of curator. VI. BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Plans budget for all educational outreach programs. 2. Monitors the outreach program budget. VII. PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: 1. Collaborates to develop programs with diverse constituencies at local and regional levels, including educators, peers in museum education and other cultural organizations, university and library staff, volunteers, and students. 2. Maintains current awareness of technical developments and professional practices for cartographic collections, informal learning, outreach programming, website platforms, publications and design software. 3. Promotes OML’s interpretative outreach programs at local, state, and national meetings. 4. Assists Curator in developing and implementing professional development workshops and programs for educators, teacher institutes, and focus groups. 5. Represents OML on University and external committees and meetings as required. 6. In addition to those specified above, those assigned by the Curator, and those negotiated annually. VIII. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS: 1. Internal (OML) Contacts: OML staff, Faculty Scholar, Donors, Osher Library Associates, graduate assistants, work-study students, and volunteers. 2. Internal (USM) Contacts: library staff; University students, faculty and staff. 3. External Contacts: diverse constituency at community, state, regional, and national level. Represented by students and teachers in the K-12 educational community; general public, including senior community; local and state cultural organizations; peers in museum education and outreach programming; and community and state residents. IX. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Experience teaching or working with K-12 students 2. Demonstrated knowledge of current methods, technologies and evaluation techniques of museum outreach programs or special collections education. 3. Knowledge of special collections/cartographic materials, their organization and retrieval. 4. Sound knowledge and strong interpersonal skills for assisting users from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds in promoting educational outreach in a variety of ways. 5. The ability to work both independently and cooperatively; to use sound judgment in interpreting and applying University Library and OML policies, and the maturity to sustain the resulting decisions. 6. Ability to learn about and use the OML’s cartographic collections to provide outreach services. 7. Excellent writing, and public speaking skills with the ability to communicate effectively with OML’s various constituencies. 8. Proficiency in standard computer software, market-standard publications and design software, and applicable web platforms. 9. Ability to physically handle cartographic books including oversized books and large format maps at heights from 3" to over 9' and with weights which range up to 50 pounds and to the read of a variety of print styles ranging in size down to 1mm. 10. Demonstrated awareness of current educational outreach practices in schools, libraries and museums. X. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: 1. Bachelor’s degree with a major in History, Geography, Fine Arts, Museum Studies or some other discipline relevant to historical cartography. 2. Minimum of twelve months working experience in K-12 outreach in a special collection 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. or museum. Or other relevant experience, such as teaching with demonstrated knowledge of current methods for educational outreach support. Demonstrated experience in the development of K-12 educational programs, services, and materials. These educational materials must demonstrate strong design, layout, and written communication skills. Demonstrated competence in standard computer software, market-standard publications and design software, and applicable web platforms. Strong multi-tasking abilities. Familiarity with standard methods and goals of special collections through either the successful completion of an outreach course in museum studies or previous employment or internship in a special collections environment. Demonstrated experience in organizing, training, and supervising support personal in implementing outreach projects. Preferred: 1. Master’s degree in museum studies, history or related discipline. 2. Minimum of two years experience as a K-12 educational outreach co-coordinator in a museum, school, or library setting. 3. Successful record of innovative K-12 students and teacher outreach programming. 4. Website development and management skills.
