July 19, 2015 Romans 12:3 Thankful Humility Humble Living • Romans 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. Humility • A modest opinion of one’s own importance • Thinking of yourself with the right perspective – “Sound judgment” – Not thinking less of yourself – Not self-deprecating – Thinking of yourself less Gracious Humility • Full acceptance that everything we have is a gift from God – Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Sacrificial Humility • Setting aside my own safety, security, or position for the benefit of someone else – Philippians 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Gratefulness for God’s provision – Genesis 32:10 I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies. Humble People 1) Please God – 1 Peter 3:3-4 3 Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; 4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 2) Are led by God – Psalm 25:9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. 3) Are honored by God – 1 Peter 5:5b-6 5 All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time. 4) Have peace – Psalm 131:1-2a 1 O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; Nor do I involve myself in great matters, Or in things too difficult for me. 2 Surely I have composed and quieted my soul.
