APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please read these instructions carefully before submitting an application. If you have any

APPLICATION PARTS: There are three (3) parts of this application. See below for instructions on submitting each part.

Supporting Documents (submitted as a single pdf file)
Includes:
— Statement of Purpose. This essay covers four areas: Motivation, Achievement, Research Interests and
Career Goals. describe your motivation to study marine sciences, your relevant academic achievements,
your specific research interests and career goals as they relate to this REU program. (Format: 2 pages
maximum, 12pt font, standard margins)
— College transcripts (can be official or "released to student" version)
— Academic Resume

Letters of Recommendation (submitted separately by each of two referees)
— Your application requires letters from TWO people who can assess your academic abilities, academic
accomplishments and motivation, work habits, potential as a researcher, and your ability to participate in
and benefit from a research internship program in ocean science. Our selection committee relies heavily
on these letters, so choose your referees carefully. Applications that do not have two letters of
recommendation will not be considered. The letters will remain confidential and will not be shared
beyond the selection committee.
How to submit your APPLICATION FORM and SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:
Save the APPLICATION FORM as a Microsoft Word document using the following format:
lastname_firstname_REUapplication.docx. Save the SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS as a SINGLE pdf file using the format:
lastname_firstname_REUapplication.pdf. Submit both the application form and supporting document files as attachments
to a single email sent to reu-applications@share.calstate.edu.
You can use Adobe Acrobat or a free online PDF converter.
How to request your LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:
Ask your referees to submit their letters as pdf files using the format:

Your referee should send the letter to the email address reu-applications@share.calstate.edu.
