HERMAN CLINICAL FELLOW IN CANCER RESEARCH Aims and eligibility The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences wishes to build the translational cancer research capability of the Faculty and University by establishing part-time Clinical Research Fellowships supported by members of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre and the Herman Trust. The fellowships provide medically qualified clinician-scientists with protected time (0.2 - 0.5 FTE) to conduct translational cancer research in either a clinical or laboratory setting in areas such as radiation, surgery, clinical trials, epidemiology/population health, screening and molecular pathology. The ideal candidate, for the majority of their non-research time, must be engaged in clinical practice within a Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre member with a proven research track record in a relevant area. Applications will be judged on Track Record, the Research Proposal and the nominated Research Environment. Successful candidates will normally hold a PhD or higher medical research degree or equivalent research qualification as well as a Fellowship of a Clinical College. All research/clinical qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis to determine academic appointment level. Candidates will normally have up to 10 years of relevant postdoctoral experience, taking into account career interruptions for family commitments or other reasons. Successful applications will contain clear evidence of internationally competitive research excellence with a strong potential for candidates to develop as self-directed health and medical researchers either independently or as a member of a research team. In the latter case the research must be clearly identifiable with the Fellow. The candidate’s application will align with the broad goals of the VCCC to more effectively prevent, detect, treat and cure cancer. The strategic goals of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre are to: 1. Reduce the cancer burden by increased cancer survival improved ‘living with cancer’ outcomes 2. Create a world-class centre of excellence in cancer with an international impact of clinical care and research (plus teaching) a clinical research/translational focus. 3. Increase investment in biomedical research, demonstrated by increased dollar value of biomedical research investment at the VCCC increased percentage share of research grants for Victoria. There are five sections of the application: The first three sections address the assessment criteria: 1. Curriculum Vitae You will demonstrate an outstanding track record relative to opportunity. Your application will detail your research experience, ability to acquire research funding, the impact and quality of your publications, and your ability to undertake independent translational research. Your potential as a translational researcher will be strongly supported by your CV and referees’ reports. 2. Research Environment and Career Objectives You will detail the environment in which the proposed research will occur outlining the achievements, impact and capabilities of the proposed research group. You will also demonstrate a strong collaborative network; multi-organisational proposals will be viewed favourably.
