This one-day course focuses on management of the patient with diabetes. It is designed to address the unmet educational needs of health care providers who have a diverse case mix that includes patients with diabetes. The purpose is to promote excellence in care and to provide up-to-date information to enhance knowledge integral to effective management of diabetes. The program also seeks to provide an opportunity for the participant to interact and network with other diabetes professionals.
This is a fast-paced course with speakers using an audience response system to interact with the audience. This provides participants with immediate feedback of their knowledge and the opportunity to reinforce comprehension and retention of key learning objectives. The course combines best practice strategies and education through case studies and lectures.
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to improve patient
outcomes by being able to:
Identify the increased risks of hypoglycemia associated with aggressive glycemic control in patients with diabetes.
Describe data from ACCORD and VADT that has raised concern about hypoglycemia in some patients with diabetes.
Identify alternatives for managing patients with type 2 diabetes who are at greatest risk from dying of cardiovascular disease associated with treatment-related hypoglycemia.
Identify critical elements for improving glycemic control in the hospital setting.
Describe the role of a multidisciplinary team, with the emphasis on the CDE in improving glucose control.
Explain glucose metrics utilized and the results used to measure program outcomes.
Explain and become familiar with novel injectable and oral medications used for the treatment of diabetes.
Describe the differences in bone mineral density between persons with and without type 2 diabetes.
Identify alterations in bone metabolism and formation in persons with type
2 diabetes.
Describe the mechanisms involved in altered bone metabolism in type 2 diabetes.
Review current knowledge and treatment therapies related to diabetic neuropathy.
Classify autonomic dysfunction when present in diabetic patients with neuropathy.
Describe the basics of autonomic clinical neurophysiologic testing.
Describe behavioral and environmental influences that are successful in diabetes prevention.
Explain an integrated approach to diabetes and mental health.
Identify specific behavioral health strategies that can improve diabetes selfmanagement.
Explain the diagnosis and prognosis of non-compressible vascular disease.
Classify diabetes as a risk factor for multiple vascular syndromes and thrombosis.
Review glycemic goals for people with diabetes.
Review some of the studies relating glycemic control to the development and progression of diabetic complications.
Nursing contact hours have been applied for through the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
