The Tongass National Forest is outreaching to fill a permanent full time Forester, GS-0460-05/07/09
position to be located in Ketchikan, Alaska at the Ketchikan-Misty Fiords Ranger District office. If you

Position Title: Forester, GS-0460-05/07/09
Tour of Duty: Permanent full time.
Duty Station: Ketchikan, Alaska
Description of Duties: This position provides professional forestry support for the District’s timber
management program. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the completion of all work
related to timber sale preparation, in accordance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
standards and guidelines.
Duties: GS-05: The incumbent serves as a trainee to acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities required for
the target position. Duties include completion of timber sale preparation work, which will include
location and marking of cutting unit boundaries, conducting cruises of timber stands, and performing
other related timber sale preparation work such as determining acceptable marking and cutting
methods, preparing detailed maps, and compiling field data.
Duties: GS-07: At the GS-07 level, the incumbent receives training and preparation toward becoming a
professional forester who manages the timber program on a District. Duties focus on the completion of
timber sale preparation work, which will include location and marking of cutting unit boundaries,
conducting cruises of timber stands, and performing other related timber sale preparation work such as
determining acceptable marking and cutting methods, preparing detailed maps, compiling field data,
and determining proper location of logging roads. Incumbent also receives training in determining
stumpage prices and performing timber sale appraisals.
Duties: GS-09: At the GS-09 level, the incumbent receives training and preparation toward becoming a
professional forester who manages the timber program on a District or a Forest.
The incumbent develops and recommends unit timber plans based on Common Stand Exam inventory
sample plots and timber stands, using GIS maps, aerial photography, Forest Plan logging system
transportation analyses (LSTA) and computer reports to implement NEPA-approved timber sale units.
Determines and arranges for the resources needed to complete the layout of sales. Establishes
acceptable marking and cutting methods, stumpage prices, and the requirements for timber stand
improvement. Implements timber sale preparation of harvest units including determination of best
road access routes, location and marking of cutting unit boundaries, and consistency of logging methods
with transportation network and silvicultural plans. Designs timber sale cruises using Cruise Design
program and FS Cruiser to meet timber sale contract requirements according to handbook direction.
Reviews and summarizes timber resource data pertinent to timber sale appraisal and contract
preparation, and subsequent timber management activities. Prepares appraisals for review and
approval by the Supervisory Forester and Regional Appraisal Specialist. Prepares timber sale contract in
Timber Information Manager database using the Gate process for review and approval by the
Supervisory Forester, District Ranger and Timber Sale Contracting Officer.
Prepares timber inventory resource reports for NEPA environmental documents including categorical
exclusions, environmental assessments and environmental impact analyses.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Persons interested in this position must meet the qualification

Work requires performing demanding fieldwork in mountainous terrain and inclement weather. The
position also requires a valid state driver’s license.
Qualifications and time-in grade requirements must be met within 60 calendar days of the closing date
