God Speaks Bible Lesson 3 Skit Characters: King Josiah Priest Hilkiah 2 Workers Messenger Props: a crown a “robe” that can be ripped (an old sheet works well) a scroll a bag of coins Preparation: Create a jumble of “stuff” and hide the scroll in it. You could use desks, tables, chairs, boxes, plastic crates, etc. Teacher: Our friends will tell us what happened when Josiah was 26 years old. Josiah: Please call Hilkiah the priest here. Messenger: (bowing) Yes sir! (Go across the room to where Hilkiah is, near the jumble.) Sir, King Josiah wishes to see you. Hilkiah: Very well. I will go right away. (He goes across the room to where Josiah is. Bowing…) Sir, you sent for me? Josiah: Yes Hilkiah. It makes me very sad to see the Lord’s house in such a mess. I want to fix it. Hilkiah: Wonderful, sir! How should I go about this? Josiah: Here is the money that has been collected so afar. Use it to pay workmen to do the necessary repairs. Hilkiah: Yes sir. We’ll get started right away. (He goes back to the jumble and calls to the back.) Workmen, come an help me fix the house of the Lord! Workers: (Come out and start moving the things from the jumble to another spot.) Worker 1 (Pulling out the scroll) Look what I found! Hilkiah: (Takes the scroll, opens it, and pretends to read a small amount then says excitedly) This is the Book of the Law! Messenger! Come and take this to the king! Messenger: (Comes out, takes the scroll, and says) Yes sir! (then heads over to Josiah and after bowing says) King Josiah, the repairs on the temple are going well with many workmen helping. The Priest Hilkiah asked me to show you this book that they found. Josiah: Book? Please read it to me. Messenger: (pretending to read from the scroll) This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says… (He continues “talking” softly for a few seconds.) Josiah: (pretends to be listening carefully. After a few seconds he rips his robe and says…) Oh no! We have not been obeying our Lord! We haven’t been careful to listen to what He says! Teacher: Back in those days if someone was very upset or sad, he would tear his clothes to show others how he felt. Once he heard about how they were disobeying God, King Josiah tore his clothes in great sadness. Josiah knew they needed to change and be sorry for how they had been living.
