Medium Term Planning
ILP: Towers, Tunnels and Turrets
Date: January – February 2015
Memorable Experience: Visit a local castle, exploring its different parts. Find out how many towers it has, how many turrets and whether it has any secret tunnels or passages. How did the castle help defend the people living inside its walls? Take digital photographs of the castle’s different areas & interesting features, and talk to
experts to discover more about the people who lived & worked there. Find out what daily life might have been like, then get into the spirit of castle life by dressing up for role play activities. Be a lord, an archer, a prisoner, a cook or a maid! Introduce technical vocabulary such as keep, moat, drawbridge, gate house, bailey, great hall, ramparts,
battlements, portcullis & arrow and gun loops.

Imagine you are the wolf… and you’re feeling mighty angry about the pigs’ new fortress! Write a letter of complaint from the big bad wolf explaining to the little pigs why you are unhappy about their new living
arrangements.
Use your fortresses for play and storytelling. Use small world models to act out an alternative version of the ‘Three Little Pigs’. What might the different characters say in this story? Perhaps you could write their words on
giant speech bubbles?
Create a display all about your little pigs’ fortress challenge. Remember to print out your digital photographs. You could even help make labels and captions for the display.
