Course objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce students to basic concepts in cell
biology, cellular biochemistry at the molecular level, and current topics in stem cells and cancer.
Cellular structures and functions that comprise major tissue types in human body are explored.
Mechanisms underlying cell adhesion, cell division, cell signaling, DNA synthesis, RNA synthesis and
protein synthesis are examined in details at the molecular level. The role of immune system is
investigated. Relevant topics in stem cells and cancer will be discussed in the context of basic
concepts in cell biology.
Topics covered: Basic concepts in cell biology and cellular biochemistry, cell structures and organelle
function, protein structures and functions, DNA synthesis, RNA transcription, protein translation,
gene regulation, membrane structure, cell receptor, cell adhesion and signaling, cytoskeleton, cell
motility and molecular motors, nervous system, connective tissue, immunology, techniques in cell
biology, stem cells, tumor and cancer.
