Moving Across Proficiency Levels
Goal:
 Start thinking across Proficiency levels Novice-Distinguished in order to vertically align levels 1-AP

Leave with specific strategies to enhance students’ skill capacity within various modes of communication.
Tasks:
Part I.
1. Read through the continuum below.
2. In your group, discuss any resonating thoughts. Feel free to write any notes from your group around the continuum.
3. Based on the continuum below, where do your students currently fall?
4. What might be needed to build students skill level so that they can advance to the next proficiency level?
Part II:
1. Brainstorm your favorite strategy that you like to use for this skill. Share with your group round robin style.
2. Now, take a look at some of the ideas for skill building and strategies cards. There are 4 strategies per skill and are color coded by communicative skill. Which do you
feel most comfortable implementing in your classroom?
3. What can you do to up the rigor and sophistication of an activity that either you have shared, have heard from a colleague, or have gotten from the resource folder?
4. Take a copy of the strategy cards and place it on your ring to take home with you.
5. Continue to process these strategies at upcoming department meetings in May and June.
