Promising Sectors and Occupations Video Competition
Goal: To create a video featuring careers that are part of one
of Windsor-Essex’s Promising Sectors. This will involve interviewing someone who
works in one of the Promising Sectors.
Choose one of the following sectors to focus your video on. Consider deciding as a class who
will be responsible for what sector- the more variety, the better!

Both you and whoever you interview will need to complete a wavier form in order for
your video to be officially included in the competition. These waivers will give us
permission to have the rights to your video. This will allow us to post your video to our
website, Youtube channel and other social media outlets.
Be as creative as you would like to be.
Interview people who can speak to the opportunities in their sector.

Please remember to be respectful when making “cold-calls” to companies and when
interviewing people.
You will need to find transportation to and from the companies you are interviewing/ the
people you are meeting with.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. How long does my video need to be?
o Between 2-5 minutes.
2. What can I use to film my video?
o Whatever technology you would like to use. Whether you have a high-tech video
camera, a cell phone or a tablet- as long as your device has the ability to record
visual and audio you are good!
3. What will the videos be judged on?
o Their content and their creativity.
4. Where do I film my video?
o If possible, in the actual workplace. If not possible then feel free to film wherever
there is decent lighting and not too much background noise.
o If you are filming on-site then make sure you are abiding by any health and
safety regulations. Your safety is your responsibility!
5. Who do I interview?
Here are some questions to help you start brainstorming who you might want to interview:

Do your parents, relatives or friends work in any of the Promising Sectors?
What type of job do you want to learn more about?
Are there businesses that you often go to that relate to these sectors?
Have you had a part-time or summer job in any of these sectors?
Have you ever watched a movie or TV show that interested you and talked about
a job in one of the Promising Sectors?

6. What type of questions do I ask the person I am interviewing?
Types of questions that you can consider asking:
o What is your job title?

o What skills do you need for your job?
o What type of education and training did you need in order to get to where you are
today?
o What is the best part of your job?
o What inspired you to work in this sector?
7. I’ve filmed my video. What’s next?
o Find a way to get it to your teacher so that he/she can put it on a USB stick for
us.
8. Are there limitations on how creative I can be?
o Not at all! We know that you are capable of coming up with ideas that we’ve
never thought of. Use this freedom to explore your creative expression.
Step by Step
Brainstorm what sector you would like to focus on
Think of who you could interview in that sector and how you could make your video
unique and creative
Connect with that person to see if filming them is a possibility. Explain the project to
them and what your vision for it is.
Set up a time to go out and film. Make sure you will have access to the equipment you
need and transportation. Have your interview questions ready ahead of time.
Get both waiver forms signed.
Edit your video and make sure that it falls between the 2-5 minute timeframe.
Find a way to get your video to your teacher before the December 31st deadline.
