Guidance for English & Maths choice for full-time 16-18 students and those 19+; for entry Sept 2014

Kendal College is fully committed to preparing learners for the highest level of study and qualification in maths and English the learners are capable of in each subject and prepare them for any future GCSE or post GCSE studies.

19+ Learners

Are not required to undertake Functional Skills or GCSE if preferred, but may take them for no additional cost, but they must be highly motivated to do so.

16-18

All learners without GCSE English and maths A*-C will undertake both English and

Maths studies throughout their programme. The follows applies to all learners who are 16-18 at the beginning of their programme

The aim for these learners is to support them to achieving Maths and English GCSE at grade C or above and so their programme will continue until they achieve both.

Attendance at English and Maths is an integral part of the study programme and attendance is required in the same way as for the vocational aspect of the programme (see attendance policy)

Those with English and Maths GCSE A* – C do not undertake a qualification in

English or Maths Functional Skills. They may still attend a class if they would like to continue improving their English or maths otherwise they will be timetabled for another activity.

Those with a current D at GCSE will undertake GCSE in that subject. Where a students has a current D in English and Maths, the results of the initial assessment and the learner’s views will be considered and the learner may either undertake

GCSE in Maths and English or GCSE in their most important subject and a

Functional Skill at L2 in the other subject, where agreed with the English and Maths

Co-Ordinator and Course tutor. The agreed programme should be clearly included in the learners Personalised Learning Plan.

In a minority of cases due to results of the screening an alternative registration can be negotiated with the Head of School, for example where screening has shown a much lower level of achievement a learner may be registered on FS rather than GCSE.

Transfers to lower qualifications should be made within the first 6 weeks of the programme and approved by the Head of School, transfer to a higher qualification may be made at other times but should be approved by the Head of School. All transfers should also be reported to Richard Evans.

Timetable issues

English and Maths will be taught for 35 weeks.

All learners without GSCE in Maths and/or English will continue this programme of learning all year.

Functional skills sessions will be 1.45 hours for each subject.

GCSE sessions will be 3 hours for evening classes, 2 hours during the day with at least one hour of extra work to be set which may be completed at home, in the

Learning Centre or may be in a separate one hour class with a Senior Learning

Assistant

GSCE Maths classes will be discrete and learners may only attempt the higher or lower paper in the specified group .

Classes will be one subject i.e. English or Maths and one level, for GCSE groups will be split by higher and lower papers.

Classes will be taught by subject specialists.

English and Maths; a whole college approach

The same topic will be taught across all Maths or English levels. A topic list will be available for all vocational tutors who will use this to take opportunities within vocational programmes to embed the topic and include it in their schemes of work.

3

Topic Themes

Each month one of the English or Maths topics will be selected as a theme, which is embedded in all our provision e.g. there will be puzzles in the café and competitions for learners to enter, key words/calculations will be displayed around campus, the LRC will display relevant materials. This could be supported by revision groups if appropriate.
