Integrative Core Curriculum: H&S Complementary Liberal Arts Credits
PLANNING STATEMENT
The faculty in the School of Humanities and Sciences want to ensure that students have the opportunity to
follow curiosities by identifying interests outside of their primary majors, to intentionally create plans that
allow them to explore those interests, and to reflect on those interests and the lessons that result from them.
The H&S Complementary Liberal Arts (CLA) credits comprise a focused academic exploration that should help
to enrich the integrative, well-rounded plan of courses, extra-curricular activities, and off-campus experiences
you undertake while at Ithaca College.
Before completing this form, you should meet with your advisor to review and discuss your plans for
completing the H&S Complementary Liberal Arts credits for the Integrative Core Curriculum. You will submit
this Planning Statement to the H&S Dean’s office and put the information in your electronic portfolio; the
Planning Statement must be on file by the end of your fourth semester at the College. If you select the “SelfDesigned Suite of Courses” option or one of the theatre BFA or BS additional options, the H&S General Education
Committee will review your statement.

Identify the option you are selecting for your H&S Complementary Liberal Arts Credits (CLA). Your CLA will
include a minimum of 12 liberal arts credits that are not required for your primary major, are taken for a letter
grade in a department outside of your primary major, and are not A.P., I.B., CLEP, or transfer credits (except as
part of an approved minor or second major).

*If you select a minor that does not include at least 12 hours of liberal arts credit outside of your major, the liberal arts credits from
the minor may be combined with other liberal arts credits to comprise a self-designed suite.
Students in the IC Honors program may use 12 liberal arts credits in Honors courses with the HNRS subject prefix (excluding the
Honors ICSM) for purposes of the CLA – check off “declared Minor” and indicate “Honors Program” in the text box.

Please complete this form after the discussion with your advisor. Rename the document when you save it,
according to the following format <LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME-H&SCLA> and email the document from your
Ithaca College email address to the H&S Dean's Office at hscla@ithaca.edu.
Be sure to provide your advisor with an electronic copy, and also save a copy to your electronic learning
portfolio (in TaskStream); it is also a good idea to retain a backup copy for your files elsewhere.
Note: If you select a second major as your CLA, you must also complete and submit a Change/Addition of
School/Major/Adviser form; if you select a minor as your CLA, you must also complete and submit a
Registration for/Cancellation of Minor/Concentration form (available from the registrar's website). Submitting
the CLA Planning Statement does not automatically register you in either a major or minor.
