Guidance Services: University/College/Apprenticeship Application Cycle University Information In university, you would be pursuing a Bachelor’s, or “undergraduate” degree in an area of study, such as Business, Arts, Science, Fine Arts and more. Most degrees are general (3 years) and honours (4 years) and some also prepare you for a profession such as BSc(N) – Nursing, BSW – Social Work, BJourn – Journalism Your top 6 Grade 12 U or M coded courses will be considered and will be used for admission. ENG4U is included in these 6. If you need required courses from high school for a program, you should research this to ensure that you have these. Visit www.electronicinfo.ca for more information about programs, prerequisites, and scholarship information. Click Find a Program or search programs by University. Remember that this site is a tool and if you have any questions, refer them to the university you are considering. The Ontario University Fair is September 25-27 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto. There will be a Pathways Fair in Newmarket at Sir William Mulock S.S. on October 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. You are invited to attend this and to ask university and college representatives any questions you may have about their programs. Applying Online 1. Ontario university applicants are required to have a letter from the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC). The letter will contain a username, personal identification number (PIN) and other pertinent information that you will need to apply to an Ontario university. 2. Once the letter arrives in Guidance (November), you can apply by going to www.ouac.on.ca/101 3. OUAC is a service centre, not a university. 4. Follow their directions to apply - $150 for 3 choices/ additional choices are $50/per choice. 5. Pay with Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. 6. Check the status of your application approx. 2 days after having applied. 7. You can only make changes on-line. 8. Offers of admission can begin as early as late December and continue until June – this is normal. 9. Offers are conditional and can be revoked if a student does not fulfill a prerequisite requirement or if a student’s average changes. 10. The Denison deadline to apply is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2015. College Information There are many options and programs available in Ontario colleges: diplomas, certificates, Bachelor degrees, etc. If you are applying to a degree program (4 years in length), please ensure that you have the required 6 Grade 12 U and/or M coded courses for admission. Many college programs prepare you for specific professions and careers, such as firefighter, paramedic, culinary arts, youth work, and more. Visit www.ontariocolleges.ca for further details on programs. This site is a tool and visiting specific colleges and/or their websites is highly recommended. The Ontario College Fair is October 19th and 20th at the Enercare Centre in Toronto. Sir William Mulock S.S. is having a Fair on October 22nd from 6:30-8:30 pm. Applying Online 1. An Ontario Education Number (OEN) is required. 2. Your OEN can be found on your timetable or credit counselling summary. 3. To apply log into www.ontariocolleges.ca It is the Ontario College Application Centre (OCAS) 4. You can apply NOW! 5. Create your own personal login information (a username and a password) and keep it in a place where you can find it. Guidance does not have a copy of your login info. 6. Once you have completed the initial login, you may be required to go to your email and respond to a message saying that you have to verify your account. 7. Continue to follow the directions at ontariocolleges.ca when applying. 8. 5 choices cost $95. 9. Although you have 5 choices, you can pick no more than 3 choices at any one college. September 2015 10. Once you have applied, you will need to log back into the ontariocolleges.ca site to make changes. 11. The Dr. John M. Denison S.S. deadline to apply to Ontario colleges is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2015. General Skilled Trades Information If you are planning/applying to pursue a skilled trade, you can do so in college or with an employer; however if you apply with a college, you are responsible for finding an employer!! You and your employer must inform the Ministry of Training know that you are working towards becoming a skilled tradesperson so that they can monitor your hours, exams, certification and Red Seal accreditation (if applicable).
