Environmental Education Research Study at the Devonian Botanic Garden You and your class are invited to participate in a fieldtrip study examining children and their connection to nature. The study is being sponsored in part by Royal Roads University and the University of Alberta. The study takes the form of a 2 hour fieldtrip to the beautiful Devonian Botanic Garden, just 10 minutes SW of Edmonton. To qualify for participation, classes must: be in Gr.4-Gr.6, with a class size of 20-30 students. be at a school within the Edmonton Public School Board have an interest in learning about wildlife in Alberta. be available for a half day fieldtrip in May 2012, as well as being willing to allow me a 30 minute post trip visit to the classroom for data collection in June 2012. be able to provide their own transportation to the fieldtrip and pay the reduced fieldtrip fee of $3.00/student (normal fee $8.75/student). The purpose of the research study is to compare the effectiveness of different pedagogical strategies on student’s feelings of connectedness to nature. The study will entail a short survey prior to the fieldtrip, as well as a short survey and art project following the field trip. Benefits to participation include a reduced cost fieldtrip, a fun, engaging, and informative program for your students, as well as a half day outdoors at the Devonian Botanic Garden.
