The Giver: Utopia Project
Imagine a perfect world… Imagine all of the things that make you happy. This perfect world is known
as a utopia.
Utopia (n) : a world in which everything and everyone works in perfect harmony.
Before You Begin, Brainstorm! Think of the negativity we see in our world! What if you had the chance
to change that? Consider what aspects of society you feel have a negative impact on civilization (pollution,
violence, discrimination, poverty, etc...). If you could remove such things and create your own
UTOPIAN world, what would it look like? How would it function? Many have attempted to create a true
utopian society and here is your chance to try for yourself.
Create Your Utopia:
What makes your utopia the perfect place? Tell us! Your travel brochure should inform the reader
about this location and highlight the best elements of your society to spark interest.
Your utopia must have:

An original name Ex: Victory City

A catch phrase for your utopia: Ex: The City of The Future and Beyond.

An image to represent your utopian vision.
More than just the visual component of your society, the governing factors and functionality must
be made clear to any visitor and/or possible resident. Pick THREE of the major governing factors
listed below and be sure to answer all of the questions in regards to your utopia:
a. Government

Who will make the rules and how will they be enforced?

How will you decide leadership? (vote, royal family, etc.)

What are some of the rules your community will have?

What will happen to someone should they break the rules?

How will your government be different from our current one?
b. Education

What will your education system look like?

What subjects will be required? Think about what skills you want to emphasize in your
community and the jobs you want people to be prepared for.

What special features will school have to help students.
1

How will your education system be different from our current one?
c. Employment

What kind of businesses will you have in your society?

How will students be trained for employment?

How will you society be similar and/or different than The Giver’s? How will it be different
from ours?
d. Money

How will people be paid?

How will you provide for the unemployed?

Is there an economic hierarchy? If so, how is this handled?

What type of monetary unit will your society use? How does it compare to our dollar?
e. Transportation

What type of transportation will your community use?

What type of public transportation will you provide?

Will you have any special means of transportation other than roads?

How does this method differ from our current means of transportation? Explain your
reasoning.
f. Recreation/Entertainment

What types of entertainment will you provide for children? Teens? Adults? Elderly?

Will you monitor the entertainment for young children and/or teens?

What type of clothing will be popular

How does this aspect differ from our current recreation/entertainment?
g. Responsibilities

At what age do children begin to have adult responsibilities? Are there responsibilities for
children?

How do you plan to maintain cleanliness and keep up the environment?

What will adults’ responsibilities be in the community? The elderly? At what point do you
consider a person elderly?

What will happen when the elderly can longer take care of themselves? How will you
provide for them?

**REMEMBER: Each governing factor you choose to include in your project should be well thought
out and developed. Your responses should demonstrate the finality of your vision and ultimately make
sense to the reader.
**REMEMBER: The idea of a utopia stems from science fiction. You may include FICTIONAL ideas
to create your vision of a utopia. Feel free to dream up the impossible.
