Financial Aid Help: CFNC offers the FAFSA Phone-In every Tuesday night in February between 5 p.m. and
8 p.m. Financial aid specialists are available to answer FAFSA questions. Call 1-866-866-CNC (2362) for help.
Financial Aid Day is almost here! Need financial aid for college? You must complete a Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grants, scholarships, and student loans to pay for college. Get
FREE help from financial aid specialists on Saturday, February 28. Visit CFNC.org/FAFSA day or call 1-866866-CFNC to register at Mitchell Community College in Statesville.
Students attending CVCC…. Testing at the college will be changing as of March 1, 2015 to a more
comprehensive test. Students planning on attending CVCC next year are encouraged to make an appointment to
take the Compass test by the end of February. Also be aware that if you have an unweighted GPA of 2.6, you do
not need to take the CVCC Placement Test for entrance into CVCC.
NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse
The clearinghouse evaluates your academic record to
determine if you are eligible to participate at a Division I or II college
as a freshman student-athlete. (The clearinghouse is not the
NCAA, but an organization that performs academic evaluations for
the NCAA.) Go to www.eligibilitycenter.org. Select Prospective
Student-Athlete.
The Counseling Office does not encourage or recommend that you pay for assistance with scholarship searches.
One of the best sources of scholarship and financial aid information is the Financial Aid Office and Scholarship
Office at the college to which you are applying. Be sure to visit each college’s website and follow that individual
school’s instructions regarding required forms and deadlines.

New Scholarships:
Athletic Scholarships: NCHSAA has announced several athletic
scholarships which are listed below. All scholarships use the same
on-line scholarship portal: http://www.nchsaa.org/studentsparents/student-athlete-scholarships. Please note these
scholarships with one exception that is included below, all have a
short turn around deadline of Friday, February 13.
NC Child Support Council Scholarship Deadline April 24th. www.nccscouncil.org
NCHSAA Minority Student-Athlete Endowed Scholarship: One male and one female from each of the
8 North Carolina regions will be selected to receive a $750 scholarship. Overall state winners will receive
an additional $1,000. Student-athletes must be an outstanding African American, American Indian,
and/or Asian Pacific Islander and be participating on a sanctioned varsity team.
Clary Medal Award – awarded to one male and one female graduating senior student-athlete
participating on a varsity sport team during his/her senior year. Athlete must have played at least two
sanctioned varsity sports during their high school career.
Jerry McGee Endowed Student Scholarship – This award is unique because it honors both male and
female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves by overcoming adversity and returned to
excel beyond expectations in their scholastics and sports.
Pat Gainey Student Award - Provides scholarship support to two student-athletes with financial need.
Applicants must be either a Senior Male on a varsity baseball team or a Female on a varsity sports team
within a county of limited financial resources.
Adams Scholarship – awarded to one senior male high school athlete on the varsity wrestling team and
one senior female athlete participating on the varsity cross-country team.
Buick Achievers Scholarship is available at dedicated seniors within and outside of the classroom who plan to
enroll in a four-year college or university and major in a field focused on engineering technology, design or
business with an interest in the automotive industry. Applications are available at www.buickachievers.com and
must be submitted by February 27.
The Drum-Wilkinson Educational Foundation grants scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000. Scholarship
applicants should be American citizens of excellent character who have are caring, compassionate, responsible,
put forth their best effort academically. Financial need is also a criterion. Applications are due to Drum-Wilkinson
by March 31.
Everette and Trudy Suddreth Scholarship of Excellence offer 30 scholarships at $2,500 each. These
scholarships are sponsored by the Carolinas Food Industry Council. Apply at www.retailpaysforcollege.org.
Florence Kidder Memorial Scholarship offers two scholarships: One for $3,000 and one for $1,000. For more
information and an application go to http://ncdames.org/refresh/templates/scholarships.php?id=49.
NC Bar Association sponsors a scholarship program for children of North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers
who were killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. Students who may be eligible apply at
https://www.ncbar.org/members/divisions/young-lawyers/. The application is due April 1.
NC Retail Merchants Scholarships offers six scholarships at $2,500 each. To apply, go to
www.retailpaysforcollege.org.
NC State USBC Youth Scholarship offers a $2,000 to students participating in a USBC North Carolina Bowling
League. The student must have a GPA at HHS with the expectation of admissions to a recognized institution.
Applications forms can be downloaded at www.ncbowls.com and must be postmarked by March 1.
Rotary Club of Lake Hickory awards approximately $35,000 in college scholarships to qualified seniors in
Catawba County. Qualified applicants must be in the top 20% of their graduating class, have financial need, and
qualify as a candidate through Service Above Self (contribution to school, church, and community. are e must be
received by the Rotary Club by March 9.
Savannah College of Art and Design Distinguished Scholars Award – is available to outstanding high school
seniors in the amount of $20,000 per year. Students should have a minimum combination math/reading score of
1220 or ACT score of 27; have a GPA of 3.7 or better; have outstanding visual arts, performing arts or writing
capabilities, honors and awards from competitions; and other leadership skills. Students should apply on-line at
www.scad.edu and have a nomination from a teacher/counselor sent to nomination@scad.edu by Sunday,
February 15.
Service League of Hickory – two students will be selected from Hickory High School to apply to the Service
League of Hickory. Each year one or more $10,000 scholarships are awarded. Criteria are based on the
following in order of importance: 1) Financial need; 2) Academic excellence; 3) Leadership; 4) Work ethic.
Applications are available in the Counseling Office. They must be returned to Ms. Kummer by Monday, March 9.
Shawn Caldwell Memorial Scholarship is offered by Jerry and Jan Caldwell in memory of their son. This
annual college scholarship of $1,500 (renewable for four years) is open at seniors who attend Corinth Reformed
Church or attend Hickory High School. If interested in applying, please contact Mrs. Caldwell at

Open Houses:
Seniors are allowed two college visits during their senior year if proof from the admission office from the college is
brought back to school. Listed below are some colleges/universities that have contacted us about specific dates:
CVCC – Senior Nights will be set up this spring for students/parents. You will learn about CVCC Programs of
Study, the application process, financial aid, scholarships and steps to enroll. Please note the following dates on
your calendar: March 30, April 27, May 18, May 26, June 4, June 25. Check in starts at 5:30 p.m. Session will
be held at Cuyler Dunbar Bldg., Room 582. Reservations are not necessary.
Campbell University Visitation Dates: Friday, March 13, Saturday, March 28. Register online at
www.campbell.edu/admissions.
