James Starley – Life as an inventor Have you ever dreamt of being the first to come up with a well-known invention? Well, this is exactly what James Starley did! On 21st April 1831, Albourne one of the world’s greatest inventors was born. Additionally, he invented the penny farthing!!However, this wasn’t the first bike to be invented. Childhood Even though James Starley born in Albourne he grew up and spent most of his life in Coventry. Amazingly, at the age of nine, he made a rat trap using only a branch off a willow tree and an umbrella rib. Family James Starley had a father called Daniel Starley, who shared a farm with James and James’s wife, Jane Todd. Unluckily for James he didn’t have any brothers or sisters. Personal information Shockingly, the only invention James came up with was the penny farthing. No one knows much about James Starley’s appearance because cameras weren’t invented when James Starley was alive. (Maybe he should of invented the camera.) Unfortunately, James Starley died 127 years ago in the year of 1888, Coventry. Even though James Starley died at the age of 57 James fulfilled his dream! James Starley is now buried in London Road Cemetery.
