Basic Water Safety and Swimming-Grade 9

Pool Rules
Safety is our first concern and the rules are intended to keep everyone safe in the pool
area.

No swimming without permission and supervision of the instructor.
No horseplay in the locker room, pool, or on the deck.
No running on the pool deck.
No pushing or shoving others into the pool or while on deck.
No diving into the shallow pool. Diving only from diving board side of pool.
No gum chewing, food, drinks allowed in locker room or in the pool area.
Students will be given ten minutes to change and be in pool area and will be
given fifteen minutes to shower and change back into school clothes.
8. Be dressed and on bleachers for attendance and instructions. Instructor will
signal when to go in and shower and enter water for warm up. Please turn off all
showers.
9. Goggles are recommended.
10. Please remove bobby pins and jewelry before entering the pool.
11. No back dives from the edge of the pool or the starting blocks.
12. No one is allowed to sit on the shoulders of another swimmer in the pool.
13. Swimmers must wear normal swim attire. No cut-off pants or walking shorts.
Two piece suits should be athletic fitting and for swimming. No Bikinis.
14. Ladies may wear nylon shorts over swimsuit.
15. Tee-shirts are allowed in the pool as long as it is without ink prints.
16. One person on the diving board at a time.
17. One bounce on the diving board before entering the water.
18. Go straight off the end of the board and get out of the way as quickly as possible.
19. Students who do not change will observe class and wait for bell at bottom of
stairs before being dismissed.
Objectives: The student will learn the basic swimming skills, survival skills and safety
knowledge to become safer around the water. Students will learn the basic
fundamentals of the Freestyle, Backstroke, and Elementary Backstroke; and will have an
introduction to the Breaststroke and Butterfly. Additional skills introduced will be: how
to jump and dive into the water, treading water, survival float, back float, kicking skills,
and rhythmic breathing. Students will be taught the safety rules of pools, lakes and
oceans. An introduction to personal safety awareness and basic assist rescues will be
offered.

eligible to pass. Missed classes may be
made up within three (3) weeks. Only two
(2) unprepared classes may be made up.
