7:30 am noon at Santa Ynez Equestrian Center
195 N. Refugio Rd.
Judge is Paul Keenan. $5 entry fee for entire day. This will be a training show to prepare for
the Santa Barbara County Fair Horse Show. Emphasis on teaching. Ribbons to be awarded +
County winner pins. Horse required except for Open Leadline Class and Relay Race.
Volunteers needed to help announce, work arena gates, assist judges, hand out awards and take
pictures/video. 4H horse project objectives # 2, 7, 6 & 10.

10:15-2 pm at Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara.
A special behind-the-scenes tour of the grounds with reserved seating for some of the
show. Our guide will be including a discussion of ethics as related to drug testing as well as
answering questions about the show and horses. 4H horse project objectives # 1, 2, 3, 9 &
10.

Los Alamos Old Days Parade
9 am – noon at 610 Coiner Street (Corner of Augusta & Coiner), Los Alamos
Wear clean blue jeans with a western belt, long sleeved white shirt with a collar, 4H scarf/tie,
western boots and a helmet. Horse and tack must be clean. Wear halter with lead rope under
bridle. We won 1st place in youth equestrian enty. In addition to riders, we will need two
banner carriers, four adults to run crowd control and two pooper-scoopers. There may be extra

Old Orcutt Christmas Parade
11:30 am– 1:30 pm at Rice Ranch Road, Orcutt.
Decorate horses at Valley Oak Morgan Ranch (1550 Solomon Rd, Orcutt) at 8 am. Then we will
ride to parade staging area together. Or, you can park your rig in the empty lot next to Coast
Hills Baptist Church on Rice Ranch Road and meet us at the parade staging area. In parade,
wear clean blue jeans with a western belt, long sleeved white shirt with a collar, 4H scarf/tie,
western boots and a helmet. Horse and tack must be clean. Wear halter with lead rope under
bridle. We won 1st place mounted equestrian entry. In addition to riders, we will need two

Basic horsemanship for beginners. Will cover body parts, parts of the saddle/bridle, grooming,
tacking up & riding at the walk. Horses provided. Intermediate/advanced 4H members
needed to help teach. We are requesting a donation of $20 per rider to cover cost of horse
transportation.

2013-2014 Horse Mastership Program
Santa Barbara County 4H Horse Mastership Project Contract

1. I will attend at least 4 (four) Santa Barbara County 4H Horse Mastership Project events in their
entirety during the 2013-2014 year.
2. If I plan to ride, I will purchase an ATSM/FEI horse riding helmet if I do not already own or do not
have access to one. I will replace the helmet every 5 years or every time it receives a severe blow. I
will wear my helmet whenever I ride at any 4H horse project event.
3. I will purchase a CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) manual for my appropriate riding level if
I do not already have one or do not have access to one. Manuals are $15.
4. If I own/lease a horse, I commit to good care and management of my project animal. I will not feed
any feed labeled for other species. I will regularly worm and vaccinate my animal. I will schedule
veterinary and farrier visits as needed. I will not expect my project leader(s) to perform veterinary
medicine/surgery on my horse(s).
5. If I own/lease a horse, I commit to regularly train/ride my horse in addition to the times that I
attend project meetings.
6. I will pay reasonable gas and travel costs if another person trailers a horse for me. I will do this at
the time of the event.
7. I will wear appropriate horse riding attire to any 4H horse project riding event. This includes long
pants and recognized riding shoes/boots. I will not wear flip-flops, stylized western footwear, rubber
barn boots, Fat Babies, hiking boots or any other footwear not designed for safety in the saddle. I will
dress modestly.
8. I will let my project leader(s) know if I am afraid or unable to do an activity. If I sense danger, I will
dismount or remove myself from the area. I do not need permission to do this.
9. I will treat my parents, siblings, project leader(s), other 4H members and my horse with kindness
and respect. I commit to do all this without complaint.
