Latin American country. Students facing extenuating circumstances may participate in an alternative domestic language immersion
experience pre-approved and determined in conjunction with the LAS Committee from the following options: National Student
Exchange, internship or volunteer work. The minimum time period for meeting the residence/immersion requirement is six weeks.
However, the Latin American Studies program recommends that students spend at least one semester abroad.
LAS Teaching Comprehensive Majors should have an advisor in LAS and another advisor knowledgeable in Early
Childhood through Adolescence (ECA program). Suggested advisors are Anne Hlas (hlasac@uwec.edu) and Paul Hoff
(hoffpj@uwec.edu).
LAS Comprehensive Teaching Majors must take and pass the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) or the ACTFL
Oral Proficiency Interview-computer (OPIc) and the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) with a rating score of
Intermediate High Level or above on both exams.
