January 2015 Dear Parents, The Forest of Reading Program ® is starting up at school. This is a recreational reading program run by the Ontario Library Association. It promotes French and English fiction and non-fiction books written by Canadian authors in different age categories. The Parent Council has provided funds for our library to purchase two sets of books for each category. Only students registered to the program will be able to sign these out, until the program finishes. Lists of the nominated books for each category are attached. Many of these books may also be available through the public library. Students in Grades 1 to 6 must register for a program in order to borrow these books. Kindergarten students can participate by reading the books with their teachers. There are 10 books in each category and students are encouraged to read all ten on their own or with a family member. Students who read a at least 5 books in a category will qualify to vote for their favourite book in April, and the book awards will be announced in May. Picture books should be returned within two days, and novels within a week. If students need longer for a novel, they can let me know. But if it is not finished after a couple of weeks, they may want to exchange it for one they find more engaging. The program will begin in two stages this year. The junior programs (Silver Birch, Tamarac) will begin the week of January 26. This is to allow students extra time to read the novels, as these usually take longer than picture books. The primary programs (Blue Spruce, Prix Peuplier) will begin the week of February 9. When a student has read a book, they are asked to demonstrate this in some way. Primary students and students reading Tamarac Express will see their teacher and answer a few short questions about the book. Students in the Silver Birch programs will be asked to write a brief response on a children’s book review website. They will be given a login for the website, and the review can be done at home or by visiting the library computer lab. In order to register in the Forest of Reading Program, students must complete and return the form below to their teacher. Thank you for supporting your child’s love of reading. - Marcia Williamson (Teacher-Librarian) FOREST OF READING ® REGISTRATION NAME OF STUDENT _______________________________________________________________________ Grade ______ Room _____ Forest of Reading Category ______________________________________________ We accept the responsibility for borrowing and returning the Forest of Reading ®books and, should one be damaged or lost, will repay the replacement cost.
