Project Title: Athletes’ affective responses to injury within a self-discrepancy theory framework
Supervisory Team:

Project Aim and Objectives:
The overall aim of this project is to gain an in-depth understanding of injured athletes’
psychological responses to optimise successful recovery and return to competitive sport.

Explore the efficacy of Self-Discrepancy Theory and the concept of self-guides to elucidate
injured athletes’ affective responses;
Examine the relationship between the various self-guides and the changes in injured
athletes’ responses over time (i.e., across injury onset, rehabilitation and return to
competitive sport);
Develop a measure to facilitate the prediction of injured athletes’ affective states and
alleviate their potentially detrimental effects – which could contribute to impact;
Examine the efficacy of an intervention to alleviate the self-discrepancies injured athletes
experience to expedite their successful return to competitive sport.
Host and Partner Organisation:
This project is a collaborative one between sport psychologists at Cardiff Met and Bangor
University. It builds on a long-standing collaborative relationship between researchers at the two
institutions, which recently resulted in a highly successful REF result. The project will build on
previous world-leading research in the area of the psychology of injury.
Application:
Applicants should have an MSc in Sport Psychology and demonstrate the necessary experience or
potential to successfully complete a higher degree by research. Prior experience/understanding of
research in self-discrepancy and injury is essential. The application form should include a statement
