SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR MAJORS IN THE
NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY

Please use the attached application form for every scholarship described in this brochure. Please check on the
application form, each scholarship for which you are applying. You must include all material required for
each scholarship for which you are applying. Letters of recommendation are optional, except for the Arizona
Broadcasters Association Scholarships.
Activity Tuition Assistance for students involved with NAZ Today, the community TV newscast; UTV-62,
the student-run campus cable television channel; KJACK 1680, the student run radio station; the NAU
forensics program and The Lumberjack student newspaper are available for both out of state and in-state
students. Returning NAU students involved in these School of Communication co-curricular activities may
apply for tuition assistance through the faculty adviser of that activity. Incoming freshmen or transfer
students interested in one of these student activities may apply for tuition assistance if they are selected to
work in one of the above listed activities. Incoming freshmen and transfer students should use the attached
application form for activity tuition assistance consideration from one of these co-curricular activities.
Students should mail the completed application to the Chair of the Scholarship Committee at the address
given on the application form.
ARIZONA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS ($1,000 to $2,000)
.
One to three scholarships will be awarded to (a) qualified broadcast student(s), majoring in Electronic
Media and Film.
Applicants for these scholarships must
 have completed 60 credit hours by the end of the semester in which they are applying,
 have a 2.5 overall GPA,
 be a major in one of the programs in the Electronic Media and Film curriculum and
 submit three letters of recommendation from either broadcast faculty or broadcast professionals along
with the attached NAU / School of Communication application form.
The broadcast faculty will nominate three candidates for the scholarship(s). The Arizona Broadcasters Association will select and
notify the scholarship recipients by July 1, 2013. Recipients will receive payment of the scholarship at the first of each semester
from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MARY E. BAYLESS VISUAL COMMUNICATION/GRAPHIC DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)
One scholarship is available to an outstanding and deserving undergraduate student who
 is a full time student majoring in Visual Communication / Graphic Design,
 has completed 28 credit hours and
 has an overall GPA of 2.7.
Selection of a recipient will be based upon portfolio reviews by the Visual Communication faculty. Non-returnable portfolios are
to be submitted in a closeable folder and should contain only ten examples of recent work (color or black & white) on 8 1/2 x 11”
sheets to the School of Communication by Feb. 15, 2013.
This scholarship is renewable if the criteria for the award continue to be met and the selection committee determines it to be
appropriate. The recipient will receive half of the awarded amount of the scholarship at the first of each semester from the NAU
Office of Financial Aid
GUY C. BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($700)
Applicants for this scholarship must
 be full-time (12 semester hours) undergraduate students majoring in Journalism,
 have completed 28 hours of course work,
 have a cumulative GPA of 3.25,
 demonstrate intention to assist with financing his/her education through part-time work and
 demonstrate involvement with one or more community service activities which enhances the emotional
or physical well being of others.
The scholarship will be renewed automatically if the student obtains a 3.7 GPA during the first semester the award is received. The
scholarship can be renewed for up to eight semesters for the same student. The recipient will receive payment of half of the
awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
BILL CLOSE BROADCAST JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)
This scholarship is available to a meritorious broadcast news major in either the Journalism program or
Electronic Media & Film who has
 graduated from an Arizona high school (a copy of your high school transcript must be included with your
application),
 completed at least 60 credit hours during the semester in which (s)he is applying,
 maintained continuous legal residence in the State of Arizona since high school, with time spent in the
armed services, on official church mission or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S.
government being excepted,
 worked or is registered to work with the student media TV newscast and,
 demonstrated ability to operate a word processor at 25 words per minute by successfully completing
JLS131.
This scholarship is renewable if the applicant is competitive in the selection process the next year. The recipient will receive half
the amount of the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MARIAH DUNLEAVY MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)
 Applicants for this scholarship must be Photography majors or intending to major in photography.
 Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid) needs analysis form to the federal processor by Dec. 31, 2012.
The recipient will receive payment of half the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
BRUCE WAYNE DYER SCHOLARSHIP (out of state tuition waiver plus $1,000 per semester toward instate tuition)
The recipient is selected by the Electronic Media and Film faculty. The applicant must be:
 an out-of-state student,
 majoring in one of the programs in Electronic Media and Film,
 involved in either news or production in one of the EMF student media activities, and
 demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) needs
analysis form with the federal processor by December 31, 2012.
MELVIN T. HUTCHINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($500)
Applicants must
 be full-time students enrolled in one of the programs in Journalism,
 have completed at least 60 credit hours by the end of the semester in which the scholarship is awarded,
 have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and
 demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career in the print or on-line media.
This scholarship is renewable if the selection committee determines it to be appropriate. The recipient will receive payment of half
of the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid .
DUNCAN JENNINGS MEMORIAL ADVERTISING SCHOLARSHIP (up to $1,000)
These scholarships are awarded by the Phoenix Advertising Club. Up to two scholarships will be awarded to
applicants who
 qualify as an Arizona resident for tuition purposes,
 are full-time students (12 credit hours per semester) majoring or have an emphasis in advertising
 have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and
 have completed 75 credit hours by the time the award is made.
E.B. LANE MEMORIAL ADVERTISING SCHOLARSHIP (up to $1,000)
This scholarship is awarded in memory of long time Phoenix advertising executive, E.B. Lane. The
scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who
 qualifies as an Arizona resident for tuition purposes,
 is majoring in Advertising or Strategic Communication with an emphasis in advertising,
 has at least a 3.5 overall GPA and
 has completed 90 credit hours by the time the award is made.
ROBERT B. LARSON JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP ($700)
Applicants must
 be NAU students majoring in one of the programs in Journalism,
 have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and
 demonstrate financial need in their application letter explaining why they need this scholarship.
This scholarship is renewable if the criteria for the award continue to be met and the selection committee determines it to be
appropriate. The recipient will receive payment of half of the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of
Financial Aid
HAROLD C. LARSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($900)
Applicants must
 have completed at least 60 credit hours by the semester in which the scholarship is awarded,
 be a Communication Studies or pre-law major with preference given to Communication Studies with an
emphasis in pre-law, or be a graduating student who has been accepted and enrolled into an ABA
accredited law school and
 have at least a 2.8 overall GPA.
The recipient will receive payment of half of the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial
Aid.
KLONDA LYNN SPEECH SCHOLARSHIP ($750 to $3,000 each)
Up to six scholarships are available ranging from $750 to $3,000 each. Applicants must
 be NAU students majoring in one of the programs in Communication Studies,
 have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and
 demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) needs
analysis form to the federal processor by Dec. 31, 2012.
The recipient will receive payment of half the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MERCHANDISING LEADERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY (up to $1,700)
One or more scholarships are awarded each year from funds generated from student projects in the
Merchandising program. Applicants must
 be declared Strategic Communication majors, with an emphasis in Merchandising.
 have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours by the time the award is made,
 have an overall GPA of 3.0. and
 have demonstrated leadership in the Merchandising program.
Recipients will receive payment of the scholarships at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MOLLER SCHOLARSHIPS (up to $500 each)
Three or more scholarships are available to meritorious students majoring in the communication programs of
Visual Communication/Graphic Design, Merchandising or Photography. Applicants must
 have completed at least 60 credit hours by the end of the semester in which they are applying,
 have an overall GPA of 3.0 and
 be registered for at least 12 hours each semester.
Recipients will receive payment of half of the awarded amount of the scholarship at the first of each semester from the NAU
Office of Financial Aid.
SANDUSKY RADIO/KJACK SCHOLARSHIP ($500 per semester)
This scholarship is available to a deserving, enterprising student who
 is a full-time (12 credit hours per semester) Electronic Media & Film major who is pursuing a career in
broadcasting,
 is currently involved in the operation of the student radio station, KJACK, and
 has a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
 Preference will be given to out of state students who hold a management position at KJACK radio.
The award will be made by the KJACK faculty advisor in consultation with the scholarship committee chair at the beginning of
each semester. This scholarship may be used for KJACK recruitment purposes for out of state students.
WYLIE SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($300)
Applicants must
 be full-time (12 credit hours per semester) Journalism majors with preference given to sports
journalists/reporters, and
 have at least a 3.0 overall GPA.
This scholarship may be used for recruitment of students into the journalism program. The recipient will receive payment of half
of the awarded amount of the scholarship at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
JAN STEVENS MEMORIAL JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP ($500)
Applicants must
♦ be declared majors in the Journalism program with an interest in reporting on family and lifestyle issues,
with preference given to current and past staff members of The Lumberjack newspaper,
♦ have completed 60 credit hours with a 3.0 overall GPA by the time the scholarship is awarded.
Preference will be given to current or past staff members of the The Lumberjack newspaper. The scholarship will be awarded half
in the fall semester and half in the spring semester.
READER'S DIGEST JOURNALISM/FEATURE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP ($800)
Applicant must
 be a declared major in Journalism whose expressed career ambition is to write non-fiction for
newspapers, magazines or other print-oriented mass media,
 have completed the COM core curricula and at least 60 credit hours during the semester in which the
student applies,
 have at least a 3.5 overall GPA,
 be a U.S. citizen and
 submit at least two non-fiction feature or magazine manuscripts with the application.
The scholarship is renewable if the applicant re-applies, continues to meet the criteria and the selection committee determines it to
be appropriate. The recipient will receive payment of half of the awarded amount of the scholarship at the first of each semester
from the NAU Office of Financial Aid.
MASON WALSH JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP ($2,500)
Applicants must be
 outstanding, full-time (12 credit hours per semester) Journalism majors,
 entering their senior year of study (have completed 90 credit hours by the time the scholarship is
awarded) and
 intending to pursue careers in print journalism.
The recipient will receive payment of half of the awarded amount at the first of each semester from the NAU Office of Financial
Aid.
ERIC AND MYRENE TEMPLE SCHOLARSHIP ($1,500)
Applicants must
 be full time (12 credit hours or more) students majoring in one of the programs in Electronic Media &
Film,
 demonstrate above-average academic and leadership potential and
 demonstrate financial need in their letter of application explaining why they want or need this
scholarship.
 Applicants from Arizona, Utah, or Idaho will receive preference.
Recipient will receive payment of half of the awarded amount of the scholarship at the first of each semester from the NAU Office
of Financial Aid.
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP ($500)
This annual scholarship is provided by former students and graduates of the School of Communication and is
awarded for either one or two semesters for a total of $500 to a student who
 is majoring in any program in the School of Communication, although preference will be given to
students majoring in Advertising, Journalism or Public Relations, if all other criteria are equal,
 is meritorious and shows promise of being a distinguished contributor to his/her discipline,
 has completed 60 credit hours by the time the award is made and
 has at least a 3.0 overall GPA.
 Consideration will be given to applicants who are making positive contributions to the School of
Communication through involvement in School of Communication co-curricular activities.
This scholarship is renewable if the criteria continue to be met and the selection committee determines it to be appropriate.
SCRIPPS LEAGUE NEWSPAPER FUND SCHOLARSHIPS ($1,500 to $3,000 Each)
These scholarships are funded by the Scripps League Newspaper Education and Research Fund and are awarded to
outstanding Journalism and Strategic Communication students.

Scripps Journalism Scholarships are for full-time students majoring in Journalism. Applicants must
have completed 30 hours but not more than 100 hours in the semester in which they apply,
have a 3.0 overall GPA and
demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career in the news media.
2. Scripps Photojournalism and Documentary Studies Scholarships are for full-time students majoring in photojournalism/documentary studies. Applicants must
 have completed 30 hours but not more than 100 hours in the semester in which the scholarship is awarded,
 have a 3.0 overall GPA and
 demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career in photojournalism/videography or documentary production.
3. Scripps News Scholarship are for full-time students who are involved in the news/editorial division of one of the
School of Communication student media operations. Applicants must
 have completed 30 hours but not more than 100 hours in the semester in which the scholarship is awarded,
 have a 3.0 overall GPA and
 be involved in news/editorial departments of one of the School of Communication student media operations during
the Fall 2013 semester
4. Scripps Strategic Communication: Advertising Scholarships are for full-time students with an emphasis or
major in Advertising. Applicants must
 have completed 45 hours but not more than 100 hours in the semester in which the scholarship is awarded,
 have a 3.0 overall GPA and
 be involved in a department of one of the student media operations during the Fall 2013 semester
5. Scripps Strategic Communication: Public Relations Scholarships are for full-time students with a major in or
an emphasis in Public Relations. Applicants must
 have completed 45 hours but not more than 100 hours in the semester in which the scholarship is awarded,
 have a 3.0 overall GPA and
 be involved in a department of one of the student media operations during the Fall 2013 semester
6. Scripps Journalism Recruiting Scholarships are for incoming high school or community college students who
intend to enroll at NAU in the Journalism program in the fall semester. Awards are based upon the applicants'
potential as student news media journalists. Scholarship recipients must work on The Lumberjack newspaper,
NAZ Today TV news department, or KJACK Radio news, unless other provisions are approved by the
Journalism faculty and scholarship committee. Renewal of the scholarship for the spring semester is
contingent upon satisfactory performance in the classroom and the applicable student media news
operation during the fall semester. (Initial deadline is February 15th, although applications will
continue to be accepted until all scholarships are awarded, but no later than June 28th.)
