Power Generation Engineers manage small and large capital and O&M projects, follow prescribed procedures and, under direct supervision, conduct analyses to develop design options or recommendations for structures, systems and components. Engineering Degrees desired: EE, ME, ChemE Controls Engineers are responsible for Instrumentation & Controls Engineering related activities at a coal fired generating plant. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following: providing technical direction for control systems, program configuration, installation of systems, and troubleshooting system problems on distributed/process control systems. System Engineers ensure the reliability of assigned plant systems. They solve system and component problems, provide direct technical support for operation and maintenance, and plan long term performance improvements. Program Engineers direct implementation of assigned programs and work processes. Typical program assignments are fire protection, equipment qualification, in-service inspection, in-service testing, flow accelerated corrosion, and generator inspections. Modification Engineers coordinate the design, construction and startup for plant modifications. They maintain design configuration and work closely with design engineers, system engineers, maintenance technicians, operators, and contractor construction crews. Performance Engineers lead improvement projects, perform root-cause determinations, manage the plant wide corrective action program, and track plant performance indicators 2) Nuclear – Engineers within Southern Nuclear oversee the operations and maintenance of our nuclear plants including construction, design, plant performance monitoring, safety, reliability, troubleshooting, and project planning. They are part of the team ensuring current and newer nuclear technologies continue to be a source for clean, safe and reliable electricity. Engineering degrees desired EE, ME, IE, Computer Science Engineer Cyber Security Engineers or Analysts determine and implement security controls for plant system critical digital assets, monitor plant system networks, perform vulnerability management reviews, maintain policies and procedures implementing secure change management, and respond to plant system cyber security incidents and threats. ITAAC Engineer is responsible for assuring the documentation and performance of construction work activities, engineering analyses, and required testing, provide objective evidence to meet the design commitment and acceptance criteria for the tests inspections and analyses related to mechanical and/or electrical functions listed in the Vogtle 3&4 Combined Operating License (COL) Inspections, Tests, Analysis and Acceptance Criteria (ITAAC). System/Start-up Engineers oversee preoperational test procedure development and test performance of assigned plant systems. They solve system and component problems, provide direct technical support for operations and maintenance, and plan long term performance improvements of assigned systems. Program Engineers develop and implement assigned programs and work processes. Typical program assignments are fire protection, equipment qualification, in-service inspection, in-service testing, NRC Maintenance Rule compliance, MOV/AOV maintenance, flow accelerated corrosion, steam generator inspections, etc. Design Engineers are responsible for the development, review and implementation of design modifications for Southern Nuclear. Performance Engineers lead improvement projects, perform root-cause determinations, manage the plant wide corrective action program, and track plant performance indicators. 3) Transmission – Engineers plan, build, design, operate and maintain more than 27,000 miles of transmission lines and 3700 substations. Transmission assets are the backbone of a system that delivers reliable service at competitive prices to our customers Engineering degrees desired EE, ME, CE Transmission Planning Engineers use load flow models of the power system and various computer modeling software to study the impact of load growth, generation additions and other possible system changes on the future expansion needs of the transmission system. This information is used to optimize the transmission construction budgets by the Operating Companies. Bulk Power Operations Engineers run the Power Coordination Center and operates the 24/7 Southern Company Control Area. This group uses the Energy Management System and other Industry applications to accept energy and capacity deals from energy marketers, to serve native load and scheduled energy, to monitor the conditions of power grid, and to relieve constraints when needed. Energy Management Systems (EMS) Engineers manage the computer systems that both Bulk Power Operations and operating company control centers depend upon to keep the transmission system operating properly. Protection & Control Engineers are responsible for relay application and settings activities on the Transmission system. Job responsibilities include generating CAD drawings for preliminary design packages and generating simple preliminary design packages. Protection & Control Field Service Engineers are responsible for installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of relay protection schemes. Most of their time is spent in the field making sure the Transmission system performs as it is designed. 4) Distribution – With customers at the center of everything they do distribution engineers plan, build, design, operate and maintain electrical systems that connect homes and businesses to the power grid. Their goals include providing reliable electricity in the most cost effective way. Engineering degrees desired EE, ME Distribution Engineers are responsible for the design and management of area construction activities for capital and O&M projects. Responsibilities include developing and implementing distribution plans; identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in the Distribution design area; preparing cost estimates, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches. Storm restoration duties are also required.
