6th Grade Integer Presentation Project This assignment is a different way for you to reflect on your learning during the integers unit. There are many ways to teach students to combine integers. The way most math presentations present combining integers is through the use of a number line, followed by problem after problem for practice. The Connected Math program uses modeling of integers using the + and – symbols to create zero pairs. This gives a concrete basis for understanding the process of combining integers. Neither approach gives every student a perfect understanding of what integers are and why they’re important. Your assignment is to create a presentation to teach 6TH grade students how to combine integers. You may decide to use either of the approaches described above or something of your own. Or, you may want to use some combination of these approaches. The key to this assignment is to do something that very few textbooks authors have ever done: make your presentation creative and interesting. Be sure to include an introduction at the beginning and a summary at the end of the presentation. You must include: A paragraph of what integers are and why they’re important Background information about opposites and absolute value Instruction in and examples of Adding Integers w/ the Same Sign, Adding Integers w/ Different Signs, Subtracting Positive Integers, Subtracting Negative Integers, Multiplying Integers, and Dividing Integers. You may also include acknowledgements, a dedication, a glossary, an index, an “about the author” section, practice problem sets, etc… Make your presentation a reflection of what you’ve learned in this unit. This should be a presentation that you can reference throughout the rest of this year, as well as next year. Be creative and show off the highest quality of work you can produce.
