Project: Optimized and determined the efficiency of a method to extract nucleic acids from
microbial plankton (viruses, bacteria, and protists) collected on aluminum oxide filters.
Characterized RNA viral diversity and dynamics along the Antarctic Peninsula, both spatially
and temporally. Determined the relative contribution of RNA viruses to the total virus
community in coastal tropical and polar waters.

Project: Performed stable isotopic and nutrient analyses of soil and water samples to
examine nitrogen cycle processes in the Eastern Subtropical North Pacific and Hawaiian

Project: Utilized a transacylase enzyme (FabD) as a monomer supplier from unrelated
carbon sources for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (biodegradable plastics) by

Project: Characterized the behavior of red-necked pademelons in Lamington National
Forest. Studied population densities of sand-bubbler crabs in a bay near the Daintree
Rainforest. Examined burrow dispersion of wedge-tailed shearwaters on Heron Island.
