Course Objectives: You are enrolled in a 4-Week bridge program and a 12 week Developmental
Math 0311 course. This combo course is designed to help prepare you for College Level mathematics.
Text: This class utilizes the ALEKS program and notebook. This book must be purchased in the UTEP
Bookstore.
You will be dropped from this course if you are not registered on ALEKS and complete your
initial assessment by Friday, Jan. 23rd unless other arrangements are made with the Director.
Calculator:
 The Aleks program is equipped with a calculator for use in certain parts of the ALEKS instruction.
You will also have access to the calculator in Windows. NO OTHER CALCULATOR WILL BE
ALLOWED. If you are caught using another form of calculator you will be turned into the Dean
of Students for cheating.
REQUIRED FRIDAY LAB:
 One hour of Friday Lab time is required weekly for the entire semester.
Classroom labs will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Seating will be first come, first served in
EDUC Room 215c. Please note if the lab is full you will need to return at a later time. A full lab
during your preferred time will not be allowed as an excuse to miss Friday lab time.

Course Grade:
 NCBM M031: You will receive a Grade of S* for the 4 week bridge program if you complete
the course to 100% by February 20th and take the proctored Goal Completion Assessment.
Failure to complete the course by February 20th and take the Goal Completion
Assessment will result in a Grade of U*. You WILL be dropped from the 12 week Math
0311 course.
 Math 0311: You will receive a Grade of S* by passing a Final Exam with a grade of 70% or
better. In order to take the Final Exam you must have completed 90% of your ALEKS pie. The
Final Exam will be given on the following days:
 Each Friday During Any Friday Lab Session from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm in Room 215c
(No final exam will be turned on later than 11:00 am)
OR During your Scheduled Final Exam Time
Friday Lab is Closed March 13, April 3, and May 8
 Note:
- You must bring a picture ID to the final and assessments exam.
- If you fail the final exam you will receive a grade of U, Unsatisfactory.
- If you fail the Final Exam in Math 0311 you may re-fill your pie to 90% and re-take the
Final Exam. This must be done during the confines of the semester unless other
arrangements are made with your instructor.
- Once you complete this course by passing the final exam you are no longer required to
attend the class.
WITDRAWAL DATE:
 If you wish to drop the course you must drop before the official drop date of the semester.
Because you are registered for two separate sections, the NCBM and the Math 0311 each will
have its own drop date.
 If you are dropped from the class before Census day and reinstated by your instructor
(reinstatement applies to MATH 0311 only) you may incur charges with Registration if the
reinstatement occurs after census day.

DROP POLICY
Your instructor may, at any time of the course, withdraw you from this course for lack of effort
demonstrated by a deficit of online hours, percentage attained, or other reason.
 ATTENDANCE - Your attendance and active participation in this class/lab are vital to your
success.

NCBM M031: If you have more than one class day of absence or lab not excused by
University policy you will be withdrawn from this class. You may make-up one class
period or lab during the 4 week course.

MATH 0311: If you have more than three class days of absence or lab not excused by
University policy you will be withdrawn from this class. You may make-up three class
periods or labs during the 12 week course.

Failure to attend lab will result in an absence.

Note: Any waiver of this policy must be arranged by the Program Director in
conjunction with your Instructor.

If you are in a special program such as those listed on the Student Agreement, your
advisor will be notified of any absence warnings issued by your instructor.
 BENCHMARK: You are also required to be on benchmark for hours online or percent of work
complete each week. Your progress in each of these two areas will be recorded early in the
morning on the first day of class for each week. Your instructor will discuss these goals with you.
- If you miss an assessment you will be dropped from the course if you do not reschedule
to take it within the same week. Schedule this with your instructor.
- If you get dropped from the NCBM M031 you may not be reinstated into the course.
- If you get dropped from the Math 0311 course you may get reinstated if you:
Continue to attend class.
Catch up to your percentage goals.
Fill your pie to 90%.
Take and successfully pass a proctored final exam with a 70% or better.
If you are behind both the hourly benchmark and the percentage benchmark for two
consecutive weeks you may be dropped from the class.
TUTORING:
 Tutoring will be done online using WIZ IQ. This will allow you to have access to a tutor during
certain evening and weekend hours. The program will allow you the option of “chat” or “facetime”. You will also be able to see a “whiteboard” where you and the tutor will be able to write
your math problem and work through the solution. There will be a presentation during your
first week of class to provide you with program details and a handout.
CREATING YOUR WIZ IQ ACCOUNT
1. Go to www.wiziq.com
2. Click “SIGN UP” in the upper right hand corner
3. Fill out the Wiz IQ profile and click “Create my account”
4. Select the first option where it will say “Learner or Student”
5. DO NOT choose to add topics
6. Click “Save and Continue”

 Tutoring Hours on WIZ IQ for the semester are as follows; however these times may be adjusted
as needed for students who log in for tutoring.

REQUIREMENTS:
- You will be given a weekly benchmark for both percentage and hours. Each week either
the percentage or the hourly goal must be met. Failure to meet at least one of those
weekly goals will result in a warning.
- Missing weekly goals twice in a row may result in being dropped from the class.
- Scheduled Proctored assessments are required. They are posted on your syllabus
calendar. If for any reason you must miss class on that day you must make prior
arrangements with your professor to take the assessment within that same week.
Failure to take a scheduled assessment will result in being dropped from the course.
- Assessments should be completed during a single class session, but are required to be
completed before your next class. Schedule additional time with your instructor.
- If you have more than 1 class or lab of absence in the NCBM M031 course not excused
by University Policy you will be dropped from this course.
- If you have more than 3 classes or labs of absences in the Math 0311 course not
excused by University Policy you will be dropped from this course.
- You may “make-up” a total of 1 absence for the NCBM M031 by attending an additional
class. Schedule this with your instructor.
- You may “make-up” a total of 3 absences for the Math 0311 by attending additional
classes. Schedule this with your instructor.
- Tell your instructor if you are in any special programs such as: Athletics, Veterans, ISP,
SSSP, START, CAMP, etc.
- You are required to take and pass a final exam for the Math 0311 course and complete a
Goal Completion Assessment in the NCBM M031 course.
- You may only use your ALEKS notebook on the Final Exam. NO OTHER NOTES
ALLOWED!!!
- You may use your personal computer for all work EXCEPT the final and assessments.

CREATING YOUR ALEKS ACCOUNT:
1. Go to www.aleks.com and click on yellow box which says “new user sign up now”. (Even if you
have used ALEKS before, please click on the new user link anyway.)
2. There will be two boxes, look for the box on the left and enter the following code:____________
3. Next you will see your instructor’s name and the name of your course. If it is correct continue.
4. Next you will be asked if you have ever used ALEKS before. Choose “I have never used ALEKS
before or I do not have an ALEKS login name”. (Even if you have used ALEKS before, please click this option anyway)
5. Open your textbook and remove the ALEKS card. Enter the code in the spaces provided.
6. Fill in the profile.
7. You can record your username and password here:

FAQs:
What if I can’t afford my book by the first day of class? Book loans are
available to most students even if you are not eligible for financial aid. Go to
https://loans.utep.edu/ and select the third option to apply for a book loan. This will allow you to
receive funds which may be used only in the UTEP Bookstore.
What if I can’t get my computer to run ALEKS at home? Please call ALEKS tech
support at 714-619-7090
What if I have to miss class? Make-up sessions may be done in any of the following ways by
working out the details with your instructor.….

Attend any instructor’s session, providing they have room for you, and inform them you
need to do a make-up class.
- Attend the Friday lab hours and let the instructor know you are doing a make-up.
What if I get behind in hours and/or percentage? You may make up hours and
percentage working from home, extra sessions in any instructor’s lab, attending Friday lab, or using
WIZ IQ, the online tutoring portal.
What if I get dropped?
 If you get dropped from the NCBM M031 you may not be reinstated into the course.
 If you get dropped from the Math 0311 course you may get reinstated if you:
Continue to attend class.
Catch up to your percentage goals.
Fill your pie to 90%.
Take and successfully pass a proctored final exam with a 70% or better.
What if I need to drop the class? The University’s withdrawal date is OCT 31st. If you need
to withdraw after that date, please contact your instructor for assistance.

What if I need special accommodations? Please contact the Center for Accommodations
and Support Services, 106 East Union. If you are eligible for accommodations, you are responsible

May I bring food or drinks into the lab with me? Bottled drinks with screw on caps may
be brought into the lab. No other food or drink allowed.

you are eligible for accommodations, you are responsible for presenting to your instructor any
DSSO letter and instructions as early as possible in the semester.

Student Contract
Your class will be taught utilizing the ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) system this
semester. This program assesses your knowledge and creates a path of instruction unique to your
mastery needs. Please review this agreement, then sign and return it to your instructor when you are
requested to do so.
I UNDERSTAND: (Please initial each item to confirm you understand the following)
______ Failure to purchase a book and code and use it to create an account and take your initial
assessment by Friday, Jan 23rd will result in being dropped from the course.
______ Failure to work on ALEKS the required weekly amount of time and gain the required
percentage will result in being dropped from the course.
______ Failure to attend class will result in being dropped
______ Failure to attend Friday lab time will result in an absence.
______ Class time is for ALEKS work only and the computer may not be used for any other
purpose. The use of websites other than ALEKS during class time will result in an
absence being counted against you.
______ The use of websites other than ALEKS to compute mathematical answers or provide
“help” is strictly forbidden. Students found using these sites will be turned over to the
Dean of Students for disciplinary action.
______ I must do my own work and may not allow others to work on my ALEKS account.
Students allowing others to work on their account will be turned over to the Dean of
Students for disciplinary action.
______ No electronic devices may be used to mathematically assist you during your work time
on ALEKS. Calculators, phone apps, laptops, tablets or any other devices are not
allowed during ALEKS work time.
______ Acknowledge that your instructor will visit with you about your progress in class. If you
do not want these discussions to take place in class you must inform your instructor.
______Failure to complete the MATH 0311 ALEKS program to 90% and successfully pass the
proctored comprehensive final exam by the end of the semester with a minimum score
of 70% will result in receiving a “U” in the course.
