Job Description Post: Dental Core Training Years 2/3 12 months post full time to start 1 September 2015 Number of posts available: 5 (to be confirmed) Job Description Overview Dental Core Training posts have been introduced for candidates who wish to continue with additional training in secondary care hospitals following completion of their Foundation Training. The posts are suitable for those dentists who, after completing Foundation Training, would like further experience prior to either applying for specialist training or considering further training as a dentist with special interest. You may be eligible to apply for Dental Core Training Year 2 if you have completed Foundation Training (formerly known as Vocational Training) and Dental Core Training Year 1 (formerly known as Dental Foundation Year 2). You may be eligible to apply for Dental Core Training Year 3 if you have completed Foundation and Dental Core Training Years 1 and 2. The posts will be split into 6 month blocks alternating between the Dental Hospital and one of Four Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) units in the region. The posts will be split between Manchester Dental Hospital and one of the Regional OMFS units in North Manchester General Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Royal Preston Hospital, and Royal Blackburn Hospital. Dental Hospital There will be rotations between the specialties of Restorative Dentistry, Oral Medicine/Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and additional dental specialties and Paediatric Dentistry/Orthodontics. Royal Blackburn Hospital A full range of Oral & Maxillofacial Services are provided, with dentoalveolar surgery, head and neck cancer, orthognathic surgery, trauma, implantology, salivary gland surgery and skin cancer surgery. In the outpatient setting, trainees will see patients with a wide range of oral and facial conditions including oral mucosal disorders. All trainees are encouraged and supported in clinical settings, with the opportunity to tailor clinical experience to the specific educational requirements of the post holder, and to prepare case reports for publication. The post holder will also work in the associated Burnley General Hospital and the Royal Bolton Hospital. With a successful surgical out of hours service, the DCTs are not required to work overnight whilst on call. Central Manchester/Salford/ /Trafford The post is based at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Peripheral clinics are held at Salford Royal, Wigan Infirmary and Trafford General as well as day case operating. A full range of surgery is practiced including head and neck oncology, trauma and facial deformity & orthognathic surgery, salivary gland surgery,cleft lip and palate and temporomandibular joint surgery. An extensive amount of dentoalveolar surgery and implantology is also carried out. Manchester Royal and Salford Royal are designated major Trauma Centres for Greater Manchester and Salford is the Regional Centre for Neurosurgery All trainees are encouraged and supported in clinical settings, with the opportunity to tailor clinical experience to the specific educational requirements of the post holder, and to prepare audits ,posters & publications.There are outpatient clinics and operating lists to which the trainee will be required to attend. There will be an on call commitment, which will provide a wide exposure to many forms of facial trauma and emergencies. The training in this post will be tailored to the career ambitions of the appointed individual. Royal Preston Hospital Maxillofacial surgery is provided across three sites with the Royal Preston Hospital the main site for all inpatient and trauma services .The other two sites are Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital. Services provided are head & neck surgical oncology, facial deformity & orthognathic surgery, implantology, salivary surgery, TMJ pathology, dentoalveolar surgery and exposure to a wide range of oral medicine conditions. Royal Preston is the regional trauma centre so we deal with a number of facial and cranio facial trauma cases. The trainee will work in a well supported environment with their own minor oral surgery lists/clinics with access to GA cases as well .There are out-patient clinics to which the trainee will be required to attend .We can tailor the requirements of the trainee to help develop their area of interest. Encouragement is given towards research and active participation in clinical audit. There will be an on call commitment as well giving a wide exposure to all forms of facial trauma and emergencies. North Manchester General Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is provided across four sites with North Manchester General Hospital being the main site for all inpatient and trauma services. The other four sites are Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Tameside General Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary. The services that are provided are head and neck surgical oncology, facial deformity & orthognathic surgery, facial trauma, implantology, salivary gland surgery, skin cancer surgery, TMJ pathology, dentoalveolar surgery and exposure to a wide range of oral medicine conditions. The trainee will work in a well-supported environment with exposure to and experience in minor oral surgery lists/clinics plus treatments under general anaesthetic as well. There are outpatient clinics to which the trainee will be required to attend. We can tailor the requirements of the trainee to help develop their area of interest. Involvement in both research and audit is encouraged and presentation experience will be available. There will be an on call commitment, which will provide a wide exposure to many forms of facial trauma and emergencies. Satisfactory completion of clinical skills will be assessed at interview.
