Observations of the first responder during the various stages of an incident are extremely critical. This course will cover first responder observations, fire behavior, building construction, origin and cause, vehicle fires, scene security, preservation of evidence, legal considerations and reporting of findings. Section 32 – TR VMR: Victim Management (NC Certification) This course will enable the technical rescuer to correctly identify and demonstrate the various procedures for accessing, stabilizing, packaging and removing a victim to a safe area from a vehicle or machinery accident. Practicals will be held outside; please dress appropriately. 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Section 33 – Fire Officer I (NC Certification) This course is designed to meet the needs of the fire service officer or supervisor in accordance with Chapter 5 of the NFPA 1021 for level 1 qualification. This course is designed to meet the needs of the mid-level officer/supervisor. 39 hours (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00am – 6:00pm, Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Section 34 – Fire Officer II (NC Certification) This course will present the Fire Officer Candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of the Chapter Five of the NFPA 1021: Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. Section 35 – Chief 101 (NC Certification) This class will offer insight into paperwork and other issues facing today’s fire departments. There will be a heavy emphasis on benefits from the State Firemen’s Association, the Firemen’s and Rescue Squad Workers’ Pension Fund, the PSOB, Workers’ Compensation and the State of North Carolina. Packets outlining the procedure to follow in case of a line-of-duty death will be provided as well. The class is designed to benefit all firefighters and is packed with useful information. Chiefs, company officers, and firefighters are encouraged to attend. 8 hours (Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Section 36 – Changing Our Culture This class will address the significant dangers encountered every day and remind first responders of the actions that can be taken to make the work environment safer and gradually change our culture to see the reduction of injuries and deaths in the emergency service. 4 hours (Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Section 37 – Basic Firefighting I This course is designed for the firefighter with little or no experience. Basics to be covered include: ladders, SCBA, fire streams, hose practices, etc. Practical applications will be used extensively. 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Section 38 – First Due Engine Company This class is designed to look at a variety of aspects that an officer or first due company may encounter upon arriving at a fire scene. Class discussion involves strategies and incident scenarios from the critical first minutes on a scene to firefighter fatalities. This class is open to all firefighters, but is especially important to the command officer. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Section 39 – Explosives, Bombs & Booby Traps Emergency responders (including EMS, Law, Fire, and Rescue workers) may encounter various types of explosive devises and environments in today’s society. This course will present both classroom instruction and practical exercises that will include bomb searches, spotting booby traps as well as other demonstrations. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Wear appropriate clothing for outside demonstrations and practicals. Section 40 – Advanced Topics of Fire Investigations This course focuses on topics above and beyond the NFA Arson Detection for Fire Responders. Topics will include, but not be limited to, Legal Updates, Origin and Cause Determination, Fire Fatalities and the use of K-9s in Fire Investigations. The course is designed for personnel who are or hope to become fire investigators within their jurisdictions. Pre-requisites: NFA Arson/Fire Detection, Arson/Fire Detection for First Responders or Equivalent. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Requires Chief’s signature on registration. Section 41 - Report Writing for Fire Investigators This class will focus on the proper written documentation of fire scene investigations. Topics covered will include: Scene notes, interviews related to scene investigation and completing the final fire report. 8 hours (Thursday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Class will be held at Wilmington Police Department “BLET Room”, 615 Bess St., Wilmington, NC 28401. Section 42 – Fire Inspection II This class will meet the objectives related to Fire Inspections for NC Code Officials Qualification. 36 hours (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Class will be held at New Hanover County Fire Rescue Station #13 – 5311 Castle Hayne Rd., Castle Hayne, NC 28429. Section 43 – Fire Inspections Con Ed (Code Enforcement) This class will meet the annual continuing education requirements for Fire Code Officials. 6 hours (Thursday 9:00am – 4:00pm). Section 44 – Building Inspections Con Ed This class will meet the annual continuing education requirements for Building Code Officials. 6 hours (Friday 9:00am – 4:00pm). Section 45 – Law & Administration Any person who desires to take any of the North Carolina Standard Inspection courses must first complete the Law and Administration course. This course meets the standards of the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Section 46 – ALS CME EMS This class will cover the assessment and treatment of the stroke patient and 12 Lead Interpretation Review. 6 hours (Saturday 9:00am – 4:00pm). Section 47 – Advanced Stroke Life Support This course addresses the prehospital, emergency department, and stroke unit management of patients with acute stroke. Using interactive discussions, hands-on workshops, multimedia (computerized video clips) and standardized patients (instructors that act out and simulate different stroke syndromes), the course includes a discussion of the differential diagnosis of stroke, rapid recognition of five major stroke syndromes, training in the use of the Miami Emergency Neurologic Deficit (M.E.N.D.) exam (based on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and incorporating the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale), education regarding the use of thrombolytic therapy in acute ischemic stroke patients, and a detailed discussion of the acute care of stroke patients in the hospital, including prevention of medical complications, rehabilitation in the acute setting, the diagnostic evaluation, secondary stroke prevention strategies, and discharge planning for the patient and family. This course is appropriate for both new and experienced providers, particularly nurses and physicians who work in the emergency departments, stroke unit, and stroke-unit equivalents. 8 hours (Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Section 48 – Ambulance Strike Team Responder This course will train EMS personnel at the responder level to serve in the role of a single resource assigned to an Ambulance Strike Team/Medical Task Force as defined by FEMA’s resource typing and NCOEMS. Participants will be taught to prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant events while functioning in a responder role on Mutual Aid assignments to jurisdictions confronted with large numbers of patients requiring mass care or medical evacuation. Prerequisites: To be eligible to attend, participants should have completed ICS-100, 200, 700, 800 or equivalent courses, and possess current NCOEMS Medical Credentials. 4 hours (Thursday 8:00am – 12noon). Section 49 – Ambulance Strike Team Leader This course will train EMS personnel in leadership or management positions to serve in the role of Ambulance Strike Team/Medical Task Force Leader as defined by FEMA’s resource typing and NCOEMS. Participants will be taught to prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant events while functioning in a supervisory role over trained personnel ambulances on Mutual Aid assignments to jurisdictions confronted with large numbers of patients requiring mass care or medical evacuation. Prerequisites: To be eligible to attend, participants should have completed ICS-100, 200, 300, 700, 800 or equivalent courses, possess current NCOEMS Medical Credentials, and have at least 3 Years Supervisory Experience or endorsement by local jurisdiction. 8 hours (Friday 9:00am – 6:00pm). Section 50 – Moulage Class Moulage is the art of applying mock injuries for the purpose of training Emergency Response Teams and other medical and military personnel. The ability to see injuries provides a more realistic training scenario for students, first responders, and emergency services providers. This class will teach a variety of techniques in creating simulated injuries. 6 hours (Thursday 9:00am – 4:00pm). Participants should wear old clothing that could possibly become stained. Section 51 - Scene Photography Students will learn scene photography procedures in both classroom lectures and practical exercises. Students will need to bring a suitable digital camera and any accessories (tripod, lenses, etc.) that they may use in the course of their duties. Cell phone cameras will not be allowed for this class. 16 hours (Thursday & Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Class will be held at Wrightsboro United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 3300 N. Kerr Ave., Wilmington, NC 28405. Section 52 - Active Shooter Response This class will cover several considerations as related to Active Shooter Situations. Information on establishing an effective response for all disciplines of Emergency Response (Law Enforcement, Fire & EMS) will be included. 8 hours (Wednesday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Section 53 - Drowning Investigations This class will cover facts & myths in drowning investigations. Students will learn scientifically proven investigation techniques and the proper application of this information in all types of drowning scenarios. 16 hours (Thursday & Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Class will be held at New Hanover Co. Sheriff’s Office “Wolfe Building”, 198 Division Dr., Castle Hayne, NC 28429. Section 54 - Fire Scene Investigation for Law Enforcement This class will guide law enforcement officers on the basic aspects of a fire scene investigation. Course will highlight the challenges and opportunities of fire scene investigation. 6 hours (Friday 9:00am – 4:00pm). Section 55 – Basic Public Information Officer (NC Certification) The Basic Public Information Officer Course (G290) is designed to prepare participants to function as full- or part-time PIOs. Additionally, this training is a prerequisite and foundation for more advanced training that takes participants from the awareness level to the mastery level in their public information careers. This training will equip participants with the basic skills needed to be full- or part-time PIOs such as oral and written communications, and understanding and working with the media, and basic tools and techniques needed to perform effectively. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm – 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am – 1:00pm). Section 56 –Traffic Incident Management This class is designed to build teams of well-trained responders who can work together in a coordinated manner, from the moment the first emergency call is made. First Responders learn the correct deployment of response vehicles and equipment, how to create a safe work area using traffic control devices, and techniques to speed up accident clearance. 4 hours (Friday 6:00pm – 10:00pm). Section 57 – Recognition of the Occult & Terrorism for First Responders This class is designed to educate students in the area of the occult and terrorism. It will attempt to dispel myth and misunderstanding often created by the media including Hollywood. The first half of the class will focus on the differences of Satanism, Witchcraft and Hispanic/Mexican folk magic. The second half of the class will focus on terrorism, including the differences between international, domestic, state sponsored, lone wolf, cyber, and agricultural. The information shared at this class is unique and valuable and encompasses over 25 years of law enforcement training. No recording devices or cameras are allowed in the classroom. (This is not a class in religion). 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm – 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm). Section 58 – Autism Awareness for First Responders This course is designed to provide First Responders with an understanding of Autism, its characteristics, and the knowledge to assist the patient on the “spectrum” in an emergency situation. 4 hours (Friday 6:00pm – 10:00pm). Section 59 - Fundamentals of Evidence Collection for Fire/EMS This class will provide emergency responders with information on the recognition, preservation and collection of physical evidence as it relates to fire & medical emergency scenes. 8 hours (Wednesday 8:00am – 5:00pm). Section 60 - Courtroom Testimony for Emergency Responders This class will provide first responders with the basics of courtroom testimony. Students will learn the importance of proper scene documentation, note taking and what to expect when called to testify. 6 hours (Thursday 9:00am – 4:00pm).
