To lay down the procedure for cleaning of laboratory apparatus.

This SOP is applicable for cleaning of laboratory apparatus in Quality control department.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1
New apparatus:
5.1.1
New glassware shall be kept in 0.1M Nitric acid for 30 minutes and then cleaned with 3% liquid soap solution in water using brush, then by tap water and followed by Purified Water and dried as per 5.5
5.1.2
New Laboratory Apparatus other than glassware shall be cleaned with
3% liquid soap solution in water using brush, then by tap water and followed by Purified Water and dried as per 5.5
5.2
Routine apparatus:
5.2.1
The Analyst shall discard the contents in the sink after the experiment and keep the apparatus in the designated place.
5.2.2
The used apparatus shall be washed with 3% liquid soap solution in water using a brush then by tap water and followed by Purified Water and dried as per 5.5.
5.3
Cleaning of crucibles:
5.3.1
The used crucibles shall be kept in Chromic Acid mixture (A saturated solution of Sodium Dichromate in concentrated Sulphuric Acid and filtered) in a desiccator for one hour and washed with plenty of tap water followed by Purified Water.
5.4
Cleaning of greasy glassware:
5.4.1
Greasy glassware shall be cleaned with Potassium Hydroxide solution
(10 g Potassium Hydroxide in 5 ml Purified Water and after cooling make up to 100 ml with Methanol) and dried as per 5.5.
5.5
Drying of cleaned apparatus:
5.5.1
Volumetric Apparatus such as Burette, Pipette, Measuring Cylinders shall not be dried by oven.
5.5.2
Non – Volumetric Glassware shall be rinsed with Methanol / Acetone and dried in a hot air oven.
5.6 Cleaning of Glass vials:
5.6.1
The contents of the glass vials after use shall be discarded in the sink.
5.6.2
Glass vials along with caps or septa shall be kept in a glass beakercontaining methanol and sonicated for about 5 minutes.
5.6.3
Further vials shall be transferred to a beaker containing liquid soap solution and sonicated for about 5 minutes.
5.6.4
Then further sonication shall be done, placing the vials in plenty of purified water.
5.6.5
Once again final sonication shall be done with freshly collected purified water.
5.6.6
After completion of sonication, traces of water shall be discarded from the glass vials and dried in a hot air oven.
5.7
All the Laboratory Apparatus shall be rinsed with the diluent before use.
