Staffing
The Nursing Learning Resource Center (NLRC) is staffed by a manager Monday through Friday
8:30am - 5:00pm during the academic year when classes are in session. Staffing during other
times will vary. If and when the manager is not immediately available in her office, students
needing assistance should leave a message (812.856.4374 or dkharris@indiana.edu). The NLRC
will also be staffed by student lab assistants throughout the week at various times.
Purpose and Philosophy of the NLRC
The NLRC is a skills lab where students are introduced to new skills essential to the
fundamentals of nursing practice. The NLRC is a place to learn nursing procedures and safely
practice the skills in a controlled, supportive, and supervised setting. Each semester students will
spend time in the NLRC learning new skills, reviewing previously learned skills, or being
evaluated in preparation for clinical. The NLRC will include demonstration, videos, interactive
learning, and clinical simulation. Students are expected to practice the skill until competency is
achieved.
The NLRC provides students with the opportunity to overcome fears and insecurities while
working with task trainers, simulators, manikins, and actual hospital equipment. The lab
simulates a clinical environment where students have the ability to learn and practice safely
without causing harm to patients. The clinical setting is not a practice setting.

Student Responsibilities and Guidelines
1. Students will display appropriate behavior consistent with the Indiana University School
of Nursing (IUSON) Handbook, policy F_04 and the Nurses Code of Ethics and
Professionalism.
2. The NLRC is an extension of your clinical and academic programs. Therefore, all of the
same requirements for maintaining professional behaviors apply.
3. Regarding attire students should follow the IUSON handbook guidelines, which require
students to wear the official IU uniform during all clinical experiences. Students will be
expected to wear the IU uniform for testing and check-offs, as well. Students are not
required to wear a uniform for practice sessions in the lab.
4. It is the responsibility of all students to clean and straighten the practice stations after
each and every practice or use.
a. Lab furnishings including chairs, tables, curtains, linen, supplies, and equipment
are to be returned to their proper location when students and/or faculty are
finished using them.
b. Beds should be left flat, in lowest position, neatly made, and with 2 side rails up
when finished with use.
c. Manikins should be properly positioned, clean, with dressings, tape and other
supplies removed when finished using.
5. No food or drinks around manikins, computers, iPads, or other medical equipment. Please
be respectful of the lab and the equipment and clean up after yourself.
6. Put coats and bags in designated area within lab (hallway to storage room).
7. Manikins
a. DO NOT use pens or markers when around manikins.
b. DO NOT use betadine on manikins.
c. Only water soluble lubricant can be used on manikins and must be cleaned with soap
and water afterwards.
d. Remove tape and dressings when finished with use.
e. Fluids can be used only with low fidelity manikins (manikins without heart, lung, or
bowel sound capabilities).
8. No cell phones during testing or in student work areas. (Please turn cell phones off.)

9. Review open lab hours which will be posted online and on outside door of NLRC.
10. Sign in and out of NLRC at all times for both practice and testing. This logbook will be
reviewed by faculty.
11. Open lab hours
a. Open lab hours will be posted online and on outside door of NLRC.
b. Open lab will consist of both assisted and independent practice. Unless an
appointment has been scheduled you will not be guaranteed assistance. However,
please ask for assistance and if assistance is available it will be provided.
c. Open lab hours will vary each semester and are subject to change depending on
usage.
12. Sign iPads in and out with NLRC personnel. iPads are not allowed to be taken out of
NLRC.
13. Students can use printers, but are limited to 10 pages per student per session.
14. Lab resources (manikins, simulators, iv pumps, and other equipment) are limited. Access
is first-come first-serve basis. Consider using ‘off times’ to practice. If necessary, we will
use an online scheduling program to ensure equal time is available to all students.
15. Report any malfunctioning, unsafe, or damaged equipment to lab personnel immediately.
16. Medications used in the NLRC are for simulation purposes only and should not be
ingested, injected, or applied in any manner.
17. All medical equipment is for demonstration and simulation use only and should not be
used on others.
18. Any sharp or potentially sharp item (needles, ampule, glass vial, IV spike, etc) must be
placed in a sharps container.
19. Equipment used in the NLRC may contain latex. Faculty and/or students who are allergic
to latex should notify their instructor and the NLRC Manager.
