Bully Free Schools
http://www.bullyfreeschools.com/index.html
Karen Powell- Instructor
The program is an anti-bullying assembly that comes to present
information to the students. They discuss what bullying is i.e. verbal
abuse and exclusion bullying. They also discuss how bullying
effects everyone in the school. Students are given an action
based 4 step plan to help prevent bullying. According to the
website this program offers a lot of follow up material to keep the
memory of what was learned in the assembly. The school is
provided with 45 lesson plans on different levels for follow up. This
seems like a great idea to me for all student levels. We can teach
them every day about bullying, but having an outside get them
involved in an assembly might make the concept click.

Keys to the Courthouse
Judge Nancy Oesterle
Keys to the Courthouse. This program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders
comprises two components. First, Judge Nancy Oesterle visits the class
or youth group, often with a bailiff, and discusses justice related topics
- including how it feels to be deprived of your liberties. She also
introduces the students to the kinds of things they may see in court. In
the second part of the program the same students visit her court room,
during which time they will see inmates handcuffed together, and may
also experience what it is like to hear the door of a jail cell slam behind
them! Judge Oesterle also has the students visit with her in her
chambers

EDEL 453 - Field Trips: Let Go!
Which field trip do you think you will actually try to use? How will the field trip enhance your social studies curriculum?
I did enjoy finding all of these fieldtrips. The one that I will definitely get involved in when I am a teacher is the Fairy Tale Mock Trial and the Keys to
the Courthouse. Both programs run by Judge Oesterle sound like a great way for students to experience a courtroom. I like that there are a few
components to these activities. All parts get the students excited and involved. All of the activities teach students the workings of the law. This Judge
seems to be very interested to let kids know about what happens if you break the law, or in the case of Fairy Tale Mock Trial, what it is like to work in
this strand of law enforcement.
What challenges did you run into when looking for field trips in the Las Vegas area?
The main challenge I ran into was the time constraints put on by transportation. There are so many great places in Las Vegas, but it does seem as
though many will be out of the range. I think field trips are important and as a teacher I would like to look into alternative possibilities for
transportation.
