STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN: Horses are frightened by loud noises and sudden movements and may react in an unexpected manner. Do not run or yell: You might startle a horse NEVER STAND DIRECTLY BEHIND OR IN FRONT OF A HORSE: These are BLIND spots for a horse and a frightened horse may kick or run over you. Horses should never be hand-fed: Fingers may be mistaken for treats and be bitten. Hand-fed horses may become rude an unruly. (Fingers feel like carrots)! When riding, keep at least one horses length between your horse and the horse in front of you: Crowding a horse may cause him to kick or bite. Check equipment for proper fit and have instructor check it before you mount: Improperly fitted equipment may cause an accident or injury to the horse and rider. Always use a halter and a lead rope to tie your horse and never tie with reins: Reins may be broken or the horse's mouth injured if tied by the bridle. 5 Treat equipment with care and always put it away properly. Never wrap or tie anything attached to your horse around your body in anyway: this could result in you being dragged by your horse. Listen and learn: the most dangerous people around horses are know-it-alls. Constantly stay alert around horses. Dismount to adjust clothing or equipment.
