Those patients who can’t breath adequately are desperate for our help.
This session will discuss why they need help and how we can help them.
This will be appropriate for both BLS and ALS providers.

Join other emergency care providers for a weekend of EMS training. All courses
(except Pet First Aid) are approved for EMS CEUs.
All classes will be held at Trinidad State Junior College Valley Campus at 1011 Main
in Alamosa.

Chest Pain and Cardiac Emergencies
What is a cardiac emergency and how should we treat it? This session will
help the BLS and ALS provider learn to determine appropriate treatment for
the cardiac patient.

Join other EMTs in a team situation for a friendly game involving EMS type
questions.
Burns (Part II)
1615 – 1715
Prehospital Stabilization of the Pediatric Patient
The pediatric patient is a challenge to assess and package. This session will
provide insight on assessment, packaging, and treatment of the ped patient.
This will be helpful for all levels of EMS care.
Airway Maintenance in the Trauma Patient
Sometimes maintaining the airway in that trauma patient is difficult—but,
very important. This session will help you become more prepared to keep a
patent airway in your trauma patient. For BLS and ALS providers.
Pain Management
When do you treat pain and how is pain best treated? This session will help
EMTs best treat their patient with pain. Most appropriate for ALS providers.

Pediatric Airway Concerns
Peds and bad airways can be a nightmare of a call. This course will help
ease your anxiety regarding pediatric airway maintenance. Appropriate for
BLS and ALS providers.
High Altitude Illnesses
The flat lander that rushes to the high country to hurry and have fun will
often end up in our care. This session will help you identify and treat those
patients with high altitude emergencies. For BLS and ALS providers.
CPAP
Those COPD patients that are in distress can be helped with CPAP.
Prehospital use of CPAP have prevented many respiratory patients from
being intubated. This session is most applicable for ALS providers.

Things That Go Boom
Those patients with penetrating trauma—gunshots, stabs, blast wounds,
etc. need our help fast. This session will discuss patterns of injuries and
demonstrate appropriate treatment. For both BLS and ALS providers.
Doug Perry: Flight Paramedic with Flight for Life Colorado, lead Paramedic
for the Pueblo Special Tactics and Rescue Team, Police Officer with Fowler.
Drug Recognition Expert qualified.
Patty Robertson: FNP, National Guard Reserve.
Flint Smith: CCEMT-P, Flight Paramedic, BTLS, PALS, and PEPP Instructor,
experience in Ski Patrol, Mountain Rescue, and EMS Management.
Jeff Torr: NREMT-B, Firefighter, EMS Instructor
Lisa Wagner: BSN, Clinical Coordinator for Flight for Life Colorado.

Simulation Lab—Medical Emergencies; Airway Maintenance; Pediatric
Assessment
This all afternoon session will involve rotation through each of the
simulation lab stations of Medical Emergencies, Airway Maintenance, and
Pediatric Assessment. The number of participants in this session is limited
and will be available for those who register and confirm first. This will be
appropriate for both BLS and ALS providers.

Pet First Aid (Part II)
Grant Writing Workshop
Have you wanted to write that grant but just didn’t know where to start?
This session will give general ideas of how to write a successful grant. This
will be helpful for any grant opportunity and will not be limited to grants
through the Colorado Department of Health.
Things That Go Wheeze in the Night. Differential Evaluation and
Management of Shortness of Breath
A large percentage of calls involve a patient with breathing difficulty. This
session will focus on evaluation of your patient and determining appropriate
treatment. This session is beneficial for both ALS and BLS providers.
Burns (Part I)
The burn patient presents a very difficult patient to treat. This two hour
session will provide insight on the processes involved in burn victims and
how to treat them. This session will provide information for both BLS and
ALS providers.

Street Drug Recognition
This class is back from last year due to its popularity. Learn to evaluate the
competency of patients to make informed decisions and aid EMS in a
patient’s refusal of care.
Farm Emergencies
We know we will get the calls that involve farm equipment. This call will
help prepare you to access and treat your patient. For all levels of providers

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider two-year recertification.
Face It, Your Head and Neck Are Above It All
Come to this session to learn more about the head, face, and neck trauma patient.
This session will be beneficial for all levels of EMTs.
Patient Assessment
This session will stress the importance of patient assessment and how to treat your
patient properly. This session will be helpful for all levels of EMS responders

Iraq—Lessons Learned
This session will bring some of the lessons the military has learned from Iraq back to
EMS. Discussion will include topics such as trauma, triage, PTSD, and other
knowledge that has come from the war in Iraq.

Air Must Go In and Out
This lecture will help understand the respiratory system and patient ventilation.
This session will be beneficial for both BLS and ALS providers.
HELLP Syndrome
This session will prepare participants to better treat the OB patient in medical crisis.
It will include information on OB patients with increase liver enzyme levels,
hemolysis, and low platelets. This session is applicable for both BLS and ALS
providers.
Emergency Childbirth
One day it will be you delivering that baby in the field. This session will help
prepare you for that field delivery. This session addresses both BLS and ALS.
Pet First Aid (Part I)
While this does not count for EMS CEs, when your pet has the emergency, you want
to be as prepared as you are for your human patient.

Description of Classes
Friday, February 5
0900 – 1700
Medic Up—Introduction to Tactical Medic
This course provides an overview of what a tactical medic does. The course
will include hands-on practice of providing medical care under fire. This
course does not provide a certification, but introduces the student to the
concept of Tactical Medicine. This course is limited to 16 participants—
first come first served. This class includes an optional charge of $12.00 for
a textbook, payable to the instructor at the time of the class.
Wilderness EMT
This course will include both classroom lecture and field practice to help
prepare the EMT to deal with emergencies in remote locations. All EMTs
and Search and Rescue Personnel will benefit from this session.

ACLS Recertification
American Heart Association ACLS two-year recertification.
Pediatrics
Every EMT dreads the kid calls. Come and learn and refine the techniques
that will help you be ready for that next pediatric call. This session is geared
for all levels of EMS.
