United States Department of the Interior Boise BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT Idaho Falls District 1405 Hollipark Drive Idaho Falls, Idaho 83401 Interest Announcement The Upper Snake Field Office Recreation program is seeking an energetic, detail oriented, and motivated individual for a detail/temporary promotion into the position of Visitor Information Assistant-GS-1001-05/06/07 for a period up to 120 days. One or more selections may be made. The individual(s) selected for this position may be temporarily promoted at the GS – 05/06/07 level dependent upon their individual qualifications. This position is open to all current Federal Government employees with competitive eligibility. This position is located at the interagency Eastern Idaho Visitor Information Center (EIVIC), Upper Snake Field Office, Idaho Falls District. Incumbent manages the EIVIC and carries out a variety of projects within the public information program. The incumbent has daily contact with members of the public and other governmental representatives, both in person and by telephone. The public contact includes meeting with persons of varied interests including very general information requests about BLM programs to very specific requests to explain BLM laws and regulations. The incumbent is expected to explain in detail BLM procedures, requirements, land status and records, and general information about BLM programs. Duties of position: Information/Education 1. Answers telephones for BLM, Forest Service, Yellowstone-Teton Territory, Chamber of Commerce lines, relays incoming calls in a polite and professional manner. 2. Prepares visitor information materials. Collects data for, writes, and edits non-sensitive items of public information, fact sheets, pamphlets, and brochures. 3. Serves as visitor information provider. Answers visitor requests for information about the BLM and its programs. Coordinates and shares information with other field offices and Regional land management agencies. 4. Disseminates prepared materials/information in response to visitors’ questions which are usually routine and repetitive, and relate largely to general situations. Refers visitors with more technical questions to more experienced personnel. 5. Maintains inventory of existing BLM publications, maps, State Parks and Recreation Registrations, and South Fork passes. Reviews printed material to determine what is acceptable for public dissemination. 6. Stays abreast of all changes in laws and regulations affecting public land and is responsible to explain changes to members of the public. Administrative 1. Serves as collection officer to sell items such as maps, State Parks and Recreation Registrations, South Fork Passes, Federal Passports, and other items. Maintains accountability records as required. Operates a cash register for the sale of various items, and inventory maintenance. Accounts for funds collected at the EIVIC, enters collections into the BLM Collections and Billings System, purchases money orders, and coordinates with transfer/deposits person in office. 2. Manages the daily operations of the map program for the field office and EIVIC; coordinates with field office, keeps records, places and procures orders, maintains inventory, identifies current and future map sales needs and plan accordingly. QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred skills, experience, and knowledge include: Greeting visitors, responding to a variety of inquiries, and answering the phone and radio background in adjudication; good communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment. Performing clerical duties; including mail and package delivery, assisting with scheduling for public events. Ability to work without constant supervision. Specialized experience at all grades is defined as responding to visitor inquiries, and accounting for collected monies from sales using computer programs and records. Planning and presenting interpretive talks and programs for visitors, local schools, and other groups and operating audio/visual equipment. Coordinating with staff specialists and public affairs office to provide the latest, most accurate and appropriate information to the public. To qualify for a temporary promotion to the GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as greeting visitors, responding to visitor inquiries, and collecting monies from sales. Performing office clerical duties, such inputting data, addressing and mailing information, To qualify for a temporary promotion at the GS-06 level, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as greeting visitors, responding to visitor inquiries, collecting and accounting for collected monies from sales using computer programs and records. Planning and presenting interpretive talks and programs for visitors, local schools, and other groups. To qualify for a temporary promotion to the GS-07, you must have 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-06 level. Examples of specialized experience is defined as communication to guide and work with a diverse workforce. Ability to create various media, using a variety of media to make presentations to audiences; coordinating and directing volunteers for special projects; planning and conducting special events; experience of collecting and accounting for collected monies using the Federal system CBS. Use of principles, concepts and methodologies of the various disciplines for education and interpretation. Employees who are not eligible for a temporary promotion may be considered for a lateral detail at their current grade and do not have to meet OPM experience requirements.
