Annual Education Results Report for the 2013-2014 School Year Holden School Box 70 Holden AB T0B 2C0 780-688-3858 http://www.brsd.ab.ca/school/holden croe@brsd.ab.ca “Every Student, Every Day, A Success.” Philosophy Character-Building Programs Every person needs to have a sense of belonging, a need to feel valued, important and protected. The close relationships students establish at school are a part of that. At Holden School we help students gain a sense of belonging, a purpose and help them feel that they are successful. We are constantly aware that our vision, values, actions and priorities have a tremendous influence on our students, who they are right now and what they will become. We firmly believe that in every child, during every day, a moment of success can be realized. Our Character Education Program takes from a number of programs. Developmental Assets Program (Search Institute) Michele Borba’s Moral Intelligence, Premier Agenda’s Character Builders and the Circle of Courage all play a role in the character development of our students. The cornerstone to our program is the development of respect and responsibility in the children as well as making them feel like they belong and are successful. Profile Holden School has a student population of approximately 150 students in kindergarten to grade six, a staff of 15 and serves the communities of Ryley and Holden. While the majority of our families come from predominately agriculture-related backgrounds, many students come from homes where the parents work in local businesses or commute to Edmonton. Holden has a four-day school week that allows the students a “family Friday” while reducing the number of days they ride the bus. The school has a student/computer ratio of 5:1 and consists of 8 classrooms, a computer lab, music room, science room, library, and gymnasium. All of the core subjects are taught as well as complementary courses, such as Art, Music and daily Physical Education. Our school has developed a strong Character Education Program and we are an EverActive School. We take pride in the fact that we have a wonderfully safe and caring atmosphere for learning and growth. A more direct development of character comes from our monthly focus on various character traits or “virtues” put forth by Michele Borba’s Moral Intelligence Program as well as Premier Agenda’s Character Builders. The program at Holden centers on educating the students about essential virtues like kindness, empathy, conscience, selfcontrol and responsibility. By teaching students different virtues through a variety of means we hope to provide them with a foundation to draw on so they know and do what's right.
