For promotion to Associate Professor:




To apply for promotion, a faculty member must be a regular faculty member, and must have
spent at least one year at Qatar University, and must have spent no fewer than five years in their
current rank.
The applicant teaching and service evaluation should be no less than “meet expectation” during
the promotion period or at least during the year immediately preceding the year of his/her
application.
The minimum requirement is four quality original publications that are not extracted from
his/her Masters or Ph.D. thesis. At least three must have been published, and the fourth may be
accepted for publication.
The applicant must be the sole or senior author of at least two of the publications submitted for
promotion.
At least two of the publications must show Qatar University as the primary affiliation for the
author (applicant for promotion).







In all cases of co-authored publications, the applicant for promotion must submit the
“Contribution in Collaborative Research Form” signed by the applicant and all the co-authors
approving his/her seniority.
The senior author is generally defined as the person who leads a study and makes a major
contribution to the work. The Senior Author typically takes overall responsibility for its content.
CBE defines senior author to mean either first author or first author after a junior team member
(such as student, research assistant, or post doc)
Papers should be of good quality published in peer-reviewed journals approved by the CBE
that, at minimum, meet one of the following CBE criteria:
o 1-Impact factor of at least 1.
o 2-Listed in SCOPUS (http://www.elsevier.com/online-tools/scopus/contentoverview) or ISI Web of Science (http://ip-science.thomsonreuters.com/mjl/).
o 3-Listed in ABDC, with ranking of “B” or better (http://www.abdc.edu.au).
o 4-Listed in Association of Business Schools
(http://www.associationofbusinessschools.org) with a ranking of 2 or better.
o 5-Listed in Research in International Management (http://www.harzing.com) with a
ranking of “B” or better.
o 6-The Financial Times top journals (45) (http://library.mcmaster.ca/find/ft-researchrank-journals).
o 7-Listed in Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunities (http://www.cabells.com) with
an acceptance rate of 25% or better. At most one publication can qualify on this criterion
alone.
Publications in predator journals that usually charge acceptance fees are not acceptable for
promotion.
The applicant should provide as much evidence as possible on the quality of the journals.
Although scholarly books, book chapter(s), and literature review papers are evidence of research
activities, only one of these can be considered for promotion.
Conference proceedings and presentations do not count for promotion.
