Flagstaff Area Child Care Providers 2010 CHOOSING CHILD CARE Choosing the right child care is very important. You will want to be sure that the provider you choose gives your child individual, caring attention, and that you are comfortable with the setting. You know your child better than anyone else and can make the best possible choice. You should visit at least three child care settings before you make a final choice. It is important to spend time in each setting watching how the provider works with children and parents. Some key things to look for are: A positive relationship with children understanding of how children grow and learn a willingness to have you visit and participate in your child’s care The Staff Are there enough staff members per child? Does staff have training and experience? Has most staff been in the program for at least a year? Does staff respect a child’s language and culture? Are they warm and friendly with children? Do they listen and talk positively with children? Do they treat children fairly? The Learning Environment Are activities right for your child’s age? Are infants playing outside their cribs? Are children allowed to choose activities? Are children’s questions answered openly? Are children encouraged to solve problems and make decisions? Are children enjoying activities? ASKING QUESTIONS When you visit a provider, here are some questions to ask to help you make your choice. The Basics What hours and days are you open? What is the cost? Do you charge a registration fee? Is transportation available, do you charge a fee? Do you provide meals and snacks? What do the children do all day? How do you handle behavior issues? What will you do if my child becomes ill? The Place Is it bright and cheerful? Are toys and equipment in a child’s reach? Are there enough toys and equipment for all children? Is there space for active and quiet play? Can a child nap quietly and comfortably? Are snack and meals nutritious? Are meals served attractively? Is there an outdoor play area? Is it shaded? Is there outdoor play equipment? Health & Safety Is it safe and clean both inside and outdoors? Are emergency procedures planned and posted? Is drinking water within a child’s reach? Do staff & children wash hands before eating? Does staff wash their hands and the changing area after diapering? Are medicines and poisons in a locked cabinet? The Children Do children seem to like and trust the adults? Do children seem happy and relaxed? Do children talk freely with each other? Do children relate well to each other? The Parents Will the provider give you references? Do other parents using the care speak well of it? Are you made to feel welcome? May you visit any time unannounced? May you speak to the staff every day? May you participate in activities? Do you feel comfortable leaving your child here?
