Missouri Western State University is a
comprehensive regional university providing a blend
of traditional liberal arts and professional degree
programs. The university offers student-centered,
high-quality instruction that focuses on experiencebased learning, community service, and state-of-theart technology. As an open access institution with a
statewide mission in applied learning, Missouri
Western proudly serves the state and is a vigilant
guardian of its fiscal resources. Western is located in
St. Joseph, Missouri, and is committed to the

Founding: Originally founded as St. Joseph Junior
College in 1915 to provide a two-year liberal arts
transfer program, Western transformed into a
four-year college in 1969, and became a full member
of the state of Missouri system in 1977. Western
received statutory authority to change its name, and
on August 28, 2005, became Missouri Western State
University.

Mascot: The Griffon – A griffon is a mythical
creature that is half lion and half eagle. It was
chosen in 1918 as the mascot of St. Joseph Junior
College, which later became Missouri Western State
University. The Griffon was selected because it was
considered a guardian of riches, and education is
viewed as a precious treasure. The wings of
Western’s mascot are spread in the shape of the
state of Missouri to signify the union of the college
with the state university system in 1977.
