Bangladesh: Leading the Pathway for eliminating NTDs and controlling Infectious diseases Institute of Allergy and Clinical Immunology of Bangladesh (IACIB) is a Non- Government, Non-profit and Socio-economic development organization and contributing in national goals and MDGs. It was founded in 1995 and registered under Ministry of Social Welfare (Registration No. DA-03362 Dated: 28 August 1995) and NGO affairs Bureau (Registration No 1440, Dated: 25 October 1999), Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. IACIB is the ONLY organization (www.iacib.org) working on control of NTDs since its inception in 1995. We have established two hospitals for Filariasis and NTDs, which are the hospitals of this kind in the country. Vision: To improve the health situation particularly Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), Infectious disease and animal health safety for overall socio-economic development of the marginalized and poor population in Bangladesh. Mission: To advance Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), Infectious diseases prevention, control and treatment in partnership and empowering communities for serving the poorest of the poor in Bangladesh and Global settings. The Goal: To prevent, control and treatment of infectious diseases mainly Filariasis, Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Rabies, HIV/AIDS & STD, Vector Control, Control of Environmental diseases including Tobacco Control, management of asthma & other allergic diseases, Arsenic, behavior change programs and rehabilitation of sufferers. The Objectives: To increase the expansion and effectiveness of advocacy for neglected tropical disease control by giving NGOs a unified voice at national and international levels, To facilitate the formation of partnerships among the group's members, at the international, regional, and national levels for scaling up of intervention for its impact To provide comprehensive prevention, treatment and care strategies with communities for responsive health care services and complementing GOB services To share technical updates, develop and uphold best practices, and contribute to national and WHO guidelines To train and build capacity for HR and mobilize resources for strategic expansion of services and collaboration with ICT for effectiveness. Location of services: The Institute enjoys good recognition for its achievement and establishment of “Filaria Hospital” at Syedpur in northern part and “Filaria & General Hospital” at Savar, Dhaka, teaching, research and services in the field of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) including filariasis. IACIB is only specialized organization in Bangladesh working on filariasis elimination. One Filaria Hospital was established by IACIB at Syedpur under Nilphamari district with support from Government of Japan. Another Filaria Hospital and General Hospital was established at Savar under Dhaka district with support from Ministry of Social Welfare, Government of Bangladesh . These hospitals are providing Filariasis 1 morbidity control service and other communicable diseases control including NTDs. The Leadership: IACIB is led by its founder Professor Dr. Moazzem Hossain, Professor of Microbiology, a WHO fellow on Immunology, Vaccinology & Bio-technology. He was the Director, Disease Control, under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and has outstanding contribution for filariasis elimination program in Bangladesh and establishment of Microbiology department in Medical Colleges. IACIB has enlightened board and active members for supporting activities with high level transparency and governance. Key projects, focus and milestones IACIB took the initiatives for collaboration with Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOH&FW) on Rabies control program in Bangladesh by organizing a meeting on 20th May 2010. This expanded and scaled up of Rabies control program in the country under Ministry of LGRD and MOH&FW, the consequences of which is the stoppage of NTV and introduction of IDTCV and also stoppage of culling of dogs. IACIB will conduct sterilization of dogs in the country (except Dhaka City), along with health education to school children , Dog Vaccination , registration of dogs etc based on agreement on 5th December 2013 with Ministry of LGRD. Accordingly a MOU was signed on 15th Jan with Ministry of LGRD and IACIB. This is a huge tasks with expanded SOP that will need significant amount of funding. LGRD Ministry will partially support with funding in this program and GOB recommended IACIB to explore funding from International donors also as WSPA, HSI, WHO, FAO, GARC, OIE and others etc. IACIB Signed an agreement and implementing Linked UP project for strengthening sexual and reproductive health rights and services among garment factory workers for aprox 2 million workers in Dhaka, funded by HASAB financed from Netherland Government for 3 years. Existing hospital services are expanded through connecting community for both specialized and general health services, training and capacity building through training institute and development of paramedics through MATS (Medical Assistants), which will contribute in MDGs. Integrated and comprehensive services are in progress with utilization of ICT with modernized and trained professionals at hospitals and community services. Plan and conduct camp for awareness and services on NTDs, national days and partnership with GOB, NGOs and private sectors Research and development activities for strengthening training and capacity building and publications for sharing experiences and lessons learned both locally and global settings.
