Tangeman asked if the date of this event was the same as Jim Wand a. Karri Sanderson stated that Jim Wand is at 9 pm so the time will not overlap 2. Sen. K. Johnson-point of clarification-did senate fund anything for Sunday Fun Day last year? a. Sen. Jones stated that Senate was originally going to fund Karaoke, but it fell through so they ended up paying less and paid $2,210 for the DJ, Photo Booth and Caricature artist 3. Diane Hawkins stated-as of last week $35,000 was approved by Senate for resolutions, the budget Senate passed this year took money from contingency fund to guarantee a balanced budget. Funding for next year depends on carry back and organization spending. Carry back last year carry back was 10,000. Next year senate is going to have less money than in the past two years. 4. Sen. Dlouhy rose against SB-23 on the grounds of Diane Hawkins’ comment 5. Sen. Jones rose in favor of SB-23 and stated the event will be a huge PR event for SAS in order to promote filling the open seats in senate 6. Karri Sanderson added a point of clarification, SB-23 lists $3,000 as the contract price, but if she gets a block price the price the contract will drop to $2500 or even $2000 if more schools book the block 7. Sen. Stajduhar rose in favor of SB-23 stating that Senate can scrutinize funding next year 8. Sen. Fisher rose in favor of SB-23 stating that it is a fantastic idea for New Student Orientation, but also reminded Senate that this issue of spending is something that he has stated many times throughout the semester. He stated that Senate needs to start having a realistic conversation on spending; we’ve put ourselves in an interesting situation because Senate has adopted a culture of “use it or lose it” in terms of funding. 9. Sen. Klimek rose in favor of SB-23 and pointed out that budget alarmism is not the way to look at this and stated that senate’s budget is dependent on the ebbs and flows of the enrollment cycle so some years there is going to be more money and some years there will be less. He also pointed out that senate recently spent over 50,000 on remodeling the Prairie Wolf rooms 10. Diane Hawkins confirmed that there was a decrease in enrollment and an increase in spending, but also stated that student fees increased by $25 last year to compensate for this but confirmed that spending by senate will have to decrease next year 11. Sen. Stadjuhar moved to previous question 12. The motioned was seconded and the motion passed carried v. Vote count 1. SR-23 passed b. SB-8 i. Secretary Baxter introduced SB-8 1. Period of Clarification a. Sen. Jones asked if a potential member of the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) organization could speak about their goals and objectives and asked how they were different than the Red Cross club (an existing club on campus) i. Jack Burt stated that they are different from the Red Cross Club because the donated blood will be distributed locally, there will be two blood drives/year and he stated that they will work with the Red Cross club and Karri Sanderson to ensure that each donation event will be at least 60 days apart 2. Karri Sanderson stated that, historically NWU has contracted a time with the Community Blood Bank, but having a student organization on campus with student leaders is a better way to organize these events. She also stated the reason that the Red Cross Club is in existence is because its founder had an internship with the Red Cross and one of the requirements was to start the Red Cross club on the college campus that she attended 3. Sen. Fisher asked Karri Sanderson if there is a point where we saturate a market, specifically, will having two clubs on campus with the same goal be a problem a. Karri Sanderson stated that she can’t tell an organization not to exist unless they violate a law or discriminate b. Karri Sanderson gave some examples of similar clubs on campus i. Exuberance is similar to Exclusive step show, but both clubs are still running ii. A few years ago Fun Club was organized and it was essentially the same as WEB and Fun Club is no longer in existence 4. Sen. Fisher asked if Karri could speak on her historical knowledge about the longevity of organizations with similar purposes a. Karri Sanderson stated that Young Dems and College Republicans are both political clubs that function just fine even though interest tends to ebb and flow with political cycles. She stated that if Senate recognizes them as a club it will not affect VII. us in a negative way—if they don’t maintain their club and the interest declines then they will eventually cease to exist. 5. Sen. Taylor asked if the representative could elaborate more on their club objectives a. Jack Burt stated that the club will meet twice a semester, one meeting will be to organize and sign up for the routine blood donating and the other meeting will be to discuss the importance of blood giving. He also emphasized again the importance of the local blood donating and stated that the local aspect is the major difference between the Nebraska Community Blood Bank Club and the Red Cross Club ii. Sen. C. Johnson asked if the two clubs will coordinate with clubs to ensure that donation times are two months apart so students can donate multiple times throughout the year 1. Karri Sanderson stated that there have already been scheduling events made in order to allow for this iii. Sen. Klimek asked the representative if the club would need money 1. Jack Burt stated that he doubted that they would ask SAS for any funding 2. Karri Sanderson pointed out that if the club needed money they would have to submit a request in the form of a resolution next semester and then senate could decided on the exact funding to give them iv. Diane Hawkins stated that there were three groups formed in 2012-13 and just until recently two have not requested an account number and one has not requested funding v. Sen. C. Johnson stated that SAS allocated Red Cross club $2,000 for next year vi. Period of Discussion 1. Sen. Stahr rose in favor of SB-8 emphasizing that this is a good way to retain and keep donors 2. Sen. Fisher rose in favor of SB-8 stating that the communication department has worked with the Nebraska Community Blood Bank to help encourage donation and introduce different ways of donating. He also stated that there plausible and logical reasons to avoid blood donation scheduling between the Nebraska Community Blood Bank Club and the Red Cross Club 3. Sen. Jones moved to previous question a. It was seconded and the motion carried vii. Vote count 1. SB-8 passed Announcements a. Tuesday, April 30th is the tentative final session of Senate b.
