VIVA Resources for Users Committee MEETING MINUTES August 16, 2013 Location: Small Library, University of Virginia Present: Tara Cassidy, Stephen Clark, Natalie Clewell, Anna Creech, Sharon Gasser, Maureen Hady, Ed Lener, Louveller Luster, Pam Morgan (recorder), Rob Tench, Jane Penner, Kathy Perry, Anne Elguindi, Cheri Duncan, David Gibbs, Leslie O’Brien. 1. Announcements For the first time in 17 years, VIVA is on the verge of getting stats from ProQuest’s Factiva 2. Budget The committee reviewed the budget FY2013-14. Kathy reminded everyone to verify the information on their resources. 3. Renewals (Many of the product discussions were either postponed until the next meeting or included in other discussions --- see below). RUC is recommending that the Steering Committee approve the following renewals: ACS WebEditions CIAO 4. ProQuest FIAF (ACTION) ProQuest, as part of the MLAIB contract, offered VIVA content in addition to the MLA International Bibliography, i.e., Literature Online, Twentieth Century American Poetry (2nd edition), and Twentieth Century Drama. However, ProQuest cannot offer Twentieth Century Drama to new customers. In its place, ProQuest is now offering FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals Plus. The resource is currently held by several VIVA members. Motion passed. 5. E-Book Publisher Packages (ACTION) Elsevier –Motion passed to acquire the 2014 frontlist. Springer –Action tabled pending further information. 6. DDA (Information) Lots of institutions had problems with the OCLC Knowledge base and their records just got loaded. Several places had problems even after the records were loaded. As a result, VIVA’s initial DDA report does not include all institutions. EBL does a weekly delete list for VIVA. EBL only does a monthly delete list for institutions. The list seems to be clean. New available titles seem to be of better quality (ex. no self-help books). This is still considered a pilot program. All institutions should be fully OCLC ready by the beginning of the academic year. Right now no new publishers are in the mix to be added. Twenty five STLs trigger a purchase. [Correction after the meeting: it is 10 STLs that trigger a purchase.] 7. JSTOR (ACTION) In June the Steering Committee approved RUC’s recommendation to have VIVA handle the billing and licensing for JSTOR Archives. RUC passed a motion to expand that role to JSTOR Current Scholarship Program in order to take advantage of discounts offered by various publishers. VIVA has not looked at JSTOR eBooks. 8. Collection Analysis Monograph Collection Analysis Kick off meeting is September 13 at UVA (10-3). Attendees should be the ones doing the work (ex. systems person and cataloger). Publisher/Subject Analysis for Print Monographs Five institutions have participated so far (ODU, W&M, Tech, UR, and JMU) May change study date to 1990 Hope to get more institutions to participate (really need to add community colleges) Purpose is to provide a snapshot of high circulating subject areas for possible addition to VIVA’s DDA For next meeting, possibly have subjects in H divided by publishers and another expanded report Video Last Copy Summary analysis should be available 9/6. 9. Ebrary Holdings in State Kathy was interested to get this data. 10. IEEE Cost Sharing The subcommittee (David Gibbs, Ed Lener and Kathy) working on the IEEE cost sharing plan proposed a modified cost-share model. We are in the second year of a three year contract. Kathy will send out proposed new cost share model for review and e-vote prior to the Steering Committee meeting. 11. Oxford Reference Online Survey of VIVA member use was managed by Jane of UVA. Recommendation of survey group is to renew for one more year. Happiest users were 2-years and least happiest were doctorals. Users are happy enough so that no looks at other competitors right now. Other subcommittee members included Natalie Clewell and Anna Creech. 12. Upcoming renewals/reviews: Taylor & Francis EngNetBase – Karen Cary and Ed Lener will serve on the review subcommittee. Jane will check on someone from UVA. Ulrich’s – Stephen will get pertinent information, and Rob will help him. 13.
