ULI SINGLE-WEEKEND COURSES
COURSES ARE COMPLETED WITHIN A SINGLE WEEKEND SESSION
APRIL 26-27, 2014
ADVANCING SUCCESS OF COMMON CORE IMPLEMENTATION FOR MATHEMATICS
With thoughtful implementation and with the needed supports and resources, Common Core State Standards
(CCSS) will help improve education for all students. Teachers from IFT’s CCSS Cadre will lead this session
to provide participants with knowledge of Core Actions for implementing the standards in their classrooms.
Participants will examine key instructional shifts required by the standards for Mathematics:
 FOCUS: narrow and deepen the time and energy in the classroom by focusing on the concepts that are
prioritized in the standards
 COHERENCE: connect the learning within and across the grades to build on foundations built in
previous years or lessons
 RIGOR: in major topics requires a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency
and application of skills in problem solving situations with equal intensity.
Workshop participants will also become more knowledgeable about text alignment, supports for
formative/summative assessments and lesson planning. The presentation will include resources for further
training and support related to the CCSS/Math.
EFFECTIVE UNION COMMUNICATION: MESSAGING AND SOCIAL MEDIA
The key to effective communication is developing a simple, persuasive message, and repeating it…
A lot! Whether you're speaking to the media, members, or your community, there are basic guidelines you
can follow to make sure you are heard.
In "Messaging and Social Media," participants will learn first how to develop successful messaging, format
it for different purposes (newsletter, talking points, etc.), and connect with various audiences.
With more than 72% of adults using social media sites and smartphone use dramatically rising, social
networking is quickly becoming one of the most effective communication tools available. You'll learn how
to set-up accounts on the most popular platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) and discover how to harness
the power of this technology to increase member involvement, educate the public, and strengthen your
union.
Don’t miss this fun, informative workshop designed to help you engage your members and the public in
conversation and action!
Space is limited. We strongly recommend that those responsible for maintaining social media or
designing materials for your local or council be given priority to register.
