NSTQ STSWECEM’C XGAT’TEM 2015 FUNDING SCHEDULE TUITION AND OTHER PROGRAM FEES Program fees include registration, tuition, and mandatory fees issued by the institution. The cost of registration, tuition and mandatory fees will be paid directly to the institution. Additionally, one program application fee will be reimbursed. Tuition and other program fees will be paid to the maximum amount of $4000.00 per academic year. Tuition will be paid directly to the educational institution where the student has been accepted. The student must withdraw from the post-secondary institution’s medical fee at the start of the program or the student will be responsible for this cost. The student will be required to bear the cost of repeating any course. BOOKS AND SUPPLIES The cost of books and supplies listed as required by the post-secondary institution will be covered by the funding support program. An initial advance will be provided to the student to pay for his or her books. If required books and supplies costs exceed the advance, the additional cost will be covered by the funding support program. Once original receipts are received by the Education Department for the initial amounts paid to the student, then funding for additional books and supplies will be provided for the second semester. LIVING ALLOWANCE A student must be accepted in a full-time program to receive a Living Allowance. If a student withdraws from a course during a term, the Living Allowance will be pro-rated for the remainder of the term. Sponsorship will be discontinued at the end of the term. The student monthly allowance will be deposited directly to the student’s bank account on the 22d of every month. The first payment will be direct deposited in August. The final monthly allowance will be direct deposited in April (for a regular September-to-April academic year). To be eligible to receive a Living Allowance for dependent children, the child (or children) must be residing with the student. A copy of the Child Tax Benefit entitlement must be provided for administration purposes. The maximum levels of Living Allowance for 2015 are as follows: Contact SXFN for your rates Category Monthly Rate Automatic student monthly support per student Single student Student with spouse Student with spouse and dependent child/children Single parent student EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM FUNDING Eligibility will be made available to children and parents that are enrolled into a full-time postsecondary program. These extracurricular program funds are the choice of the parent/family. The NSTQ Band’s Education Department will provide a maximum of $350.00 per child for preschool to Grade 12 students, for after school program registrations. Ongoing extracurricular funds are available according to full-time annual post-secondary student sponsorship. DAMAGE DEPOSIT When the student needs rental accommodation in order to attend a post-secondary institution and a damage deposit is required, funding support will pay the damage deposit directly to the landlord. Upon completion of the post-secondary program, the student is required to return the damage deposit to the Education Department. TRAVEL ALLOWANCE SEASONAL TRAVEL Students who are required to travel a minimum distance of 100 kilometers and are living away from their normal place of residence are eligible for reimbursement of travel cost twice each year to and from the closest public post-secondary institution. Reimbursable travel expenses will normally be the least expensive route for travel. EMERGENCY TRAVEL NSTQ Bands do not provide emergency travel from the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP), as in accordance to the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development funding guidelines. ORIENTATION TRAVEL If the post-secondary educational institution has a mandatory program orientation before the start of the semester, the funding support program will reimburse the cost of travel, accommodation, and meals. The student must receive prior approval from the Education Department for the maximum amount that the student will be reimbursed. The student must provide original receipts for the costs associated with attending the program orientation. TUTORING EXPENSE ASSISTANCE Students who require tutoring in any of the courses leading to the completion of their program(s) are required to contact the Education Department for approval. All costs for tutorial services must be identified and payments will be made directly by the Education Department to the tutor or to the tutoring service. PARKING PASSES/BUS PASSES Student bus passes will be provided on an individual need and pending funding availability. Students must receive prior approval from the Education Department for the cost of bus passes. STUDENT ADVANCES The only funding advance available to students is the advance for the purchase of books and supplies at the beginning of semesters. SPECIAL CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Special clothing or equipment may be required for some programs; for example in nursing, trades, forestry, and other technical programs. Documentation from the educational institution detailing specific needs and costs is required. The documentation must state that the clothing, equipment, and/or supplies are a mandatory course requirement. This documentation should be included with the student’s application for funding support. SPECIAL CONTINGENCY Special Expenses such as field trip expenses or practicums may be covered by the funding support program. Documentation from the educational institution stating that the field trip or practicum is a required part of the program and detailing the cost of the special expenses must be submitted to the Education Department. Whenever possible, this documentation should accompany the student’s application for funding support. The student must receive prior approval of the Education Department for any special contingency expenses. INCENTIVES Northern Secwepemc students may be eligible for incentives if their academic studies directly contribute to First Nations achieving self-government and economic self-reliance. In addition, incentives may also be granted to recognize academic achievement. Scholarships may be made available to a maximum of five per cent of the PSSSP-funded student population. The NStQ Bands will establish a fair and accountable process for awarding incentives and will determine the students receiving scholarships. Eligible students may receive either one Strategic Studies Scholarship or one Academic Achievement Scholarship in an academic year. STRATEGIC STUDIES SCHOLARSHIPS In recognition of students studying in areas that directly contribute to First Nations achieving self-government and economic self-reliance, NStQ may offer Strategic Studies Scholarships to students in full-time post-secondary studies in the areas of commerce, political studies, public or business administration, physical science, mathematics, computer sciences, forestry, engineering or natural resources studies. The Strategic Studies Scholarship is for a maximum of $1000 per year and may be provided for Level 1 or Level 2 students who have successfully completed a full year of studies and who are continuing studies in the following academic year. The award is given at the beginning of the next academic term and ends after completion of the third year of studies. Awards are not given to students who take more than 2 years to complete a diploma or more than 4 years to complete a degree. Awards are not given after Level 2. Awards are not given to students who begin studies in January and who have only completed a partial year of studies.
