1 Brief Report FACULTY OF KINESIOLOGY AND RECREATION MANAGEMENT Undergraduate Advisory Board Meeting Thursday, April 23, 2009 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. University Club, Pembina Hall, 26 MacLean Crescent Members present: Bruce Miller (chair), Tanya Angus, Karen Beck, Ted Bigelow, Janice Butcher, Mark Clarke, Alain Couture, Nick Dyck, Laurel Hanna, Paul Huntington, Kelly MacKay, Brandy McKay, Grant McManes, Michell Meade, David Schmeichel, Jane Watkinson, Joanne Weir 1.0 Welcome Chair, Bruce Miller, welcomed Advisory Board members and introduced the new faculty Communications, Promotions and Alumni Relations Officer, David Schmeichel. 2.0 Faculty Strategic Planning Update Dean Jane Watkinson reported on the continuing strategic planning process underway in the Faculty. Associate Dean Kelly MacKay reported on the Undergraduate Program 10-year review that is presently underway. The Faculty is working on their self-study, and external reviewers will be invited to visit the Faculty in the fall. 3.0 Alumni Communications David Schmeichel gave an overview of the responsibilities of his position and outlined initiatives that he was undertaking. He is focusing on re-connecting with graduates and would appreciate input from Advisory Board members. Discussion followed on ways to do this. The Faculty web-site has been expanded to include highlighted graduates and employment opportunities. 4.0 Faculty Update a) New stadium and fitness facility Jane reported that planning continues regarding the new fitness facility, including the possibility of a capital campaign. Discussion followed on how the Advisory Board could help. Motion: Ted Bigelow – Grant McManes: That the Advisory Board provide a letter of support for the proposed fitness facility at the University of Manitoba. Carried. Note: David Schmeichel has met with Chair Bruce Miller to discuss the letter but will wait until later to draft the letter. It was also suggested that the Advisory Board could develop a working group to assist with promoting the facility. b) Career Expo Janice Butcher reported that a very successful Career Expo was held on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. The event was designed to inform students about career possibilities in the fields of kinesiology, physical education and recreation management, both for students enrolled in the faculty and students (University 1 and some high school) who might be contemplating an application to the faculty. Over 30 exhibitors set up booths in a trade show format and 17 graduate students presented research posters to inform and encourage undergraduate students to consider graduate education. The event was very positively received by the 250 students who attended. Thank you to the Advisory Board committee that helped to organize the event, to the Advisory Board members who represented their agency at the Expo, and to other members who attended the event. Note: The 2009 Career Expo will be held on Wed., November 18 in the Max Bell Center. 2 c) Early Admissions Tanya Angus reported on the numbers of students who had been given early offers into the Faculty’s three undergraduate degrees. A member reported that he had heard a rumour that the Faculty of KRM was no longer offering an athletic therapy program. This rumour is not true – we still have a very viable athletic therapy program. d) Staffing Three new Faculty members have joined the Faculty: Dr. Russell Field, assistant professor; Dr. Field, a former lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Physical Education and Health, specializes in historical and sociological inquiry in sport, including the experiences of sport spectators, and sport, media, and popular culture; Dr. Leisha Strachan, assistant professor; Dr. Strachan, an FKRM alumnus and post-doctoral fellow at Queen’s University (School of Kinesiology and Health Studies), has a background in positive youth development in sport, specifically the experiences of children and youth in sport programs and examining personal outcomes; and Sarah Teetzel, lecturer; Ms. Teetzel, a doctoral candidate at the University of Western Ontario’s School of Kinesiology (who is scheduled to complete her Ph.D. this August), has expertise in sociocultural topics in kinesiology and sport, including ethics, doping, and transgender athletes. 5.0 Information Sharing Because of the lateness of the meeting, we did not go completely around the table. Mark Clark advocated for use of the mentorship program offered through Career Services and Paul Huntingdon reported that the Minister of Manitoba Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport has committed to increasing the salaries of municipal recreation directors. 6.0 Next Meeting The next meeting will be held in the fall, 2009 (TBA).
