Dear Craig, Detailed below is the DRAFT report for the strategy document that I referred to. Please note; it has NOT been approved by board yet. The environmental impacts of landfill sites are well reported. Costs associated with the disposal of waste to landfill have increased year on year as has landfill tax. Several new laws have resulted in an increase in the numbers of items that are prohibited from disposal via landfill. This has resulted in further use of specialist disposal contractors, and further increase in costs. Recycling in the home environment is now common practice. Staff and residents expect to have recycling facilities available. UPP currently provide facilities for common waste streams at sites with UPP waste responsibility. The Government is aiming to eliminate waste to landfill by 2050. Legislation is due to come into force in Jan 2015 requiring the separation of paper, plastic, metal and glass. Legislation is now in force requiring the application of the waste hierarchy. This is especially relevant at the end of the academic year when the residents vacate the accommodation. Many sites already have schemes in place to divert reusable items to charity or to the following year’s intake. Any sites with UPP waste responsibility must now adopt these measures to meet this requirement. Strategic Aims: To improve the environmental performance of our buildings by: Moving towards carbon neutral energy performance. Adopting environmentally conscious procurement practice. Promoting renewable energy systems. Reducing water consumption and waste output. Systematically reducing resource consumption, and progressing to zero waste through best practice environmental management and cultural change. Acting in an environmentally responsible way. Objectives: Minimising and actively managing waste through the application of the waste hierarchy. Promoting management systems which reduce the production of potential waste materials. Encouraging the use of ‘recycled’ products where appropriate. Promoting purchasing and development processes that give due consideration to the true cost of waste. Reviewing all waste streams and work to minimise waste generation, maximise recycling and minimise consumption. Working with our building contractors to minimise the amount of construction waste sent to landfill. Key Performance Indicators: Waste mass generated kg per resident per year (on sites with UPP resident’s waste responsibility) or by volume if mass data is not available M3 per resident per year. Recycled waste proportion %. Percentage waste recycled for all sinking fund works. Waste streams table completed and recorded on BHI for each site. Hazardous waste quantities recorded on each consignment note in kg. Annual hazardous waste quantities reported in kg.
