US Forest Service International Programs Social Security Numbers International Visitor Program A Social Security Number (SSN) is a US government identity number issued by the Social Security Administration (SAA), which is used mainly for the purpose of filing US taxes. Having a SSN as an identification number may also help make other processes easier such as opening a bank account, purchasing a mobile phone plan and getting a driver’s license. Holders of J-1 visas are eligible to apply for and obtain an SSN as they are technically eligible for employment in the United States, within the limits of their particular program. However, J-1 holders are exempt from contributing to Social Security as long as they are considered a “non-resident” alien. J-2 visas holders are not automatically eligible for an SSN as they are only eligible to work after applying for and receiving employment authorization.
