After hearing much feedback and concern from faculty regarding the current academic calendar,
especially centering around exam week, turning in final grades and commencement, an alternate
schedule has been developed for spring 2015. For this calendar to work best, the standard start
date for any semester would be a Wednesday. The following points should be noted:
 Since there are numerous means to assess student learning, a final exam may not always be a
necessity; however, if an exam is given during final exam week, it must be given at the time
published in the official final exam schedule.
 The proposed calendar provides faculty more time to post final grades
 Reading day is retained; however, reading day could be removed in the future if faculty find
it no longer necessary
 Commencement is scheduled the Saturday after the last final exam (Wednesday); therefore,
there is no long waiting period when students would leave town and have to return for
commencement. In addition, reducing the time between the last final exam day and
commencement could result in more faculty being present at commencement.
 There is no effect on financial aid because there is no loss in official semester days.
We would appreciate feedback regarding the proposed calendar. Implementation of the calendar
is proposed for spring 2015 to evaluate the new process and subsequently make appropriate
changes as deemed appropriate.
