Lesson Plan More practices on optimization problems- will the winner lose? Date: 2015-10-5 Time: 11:46-12:38 Duration: 55 minutes Inquiry: By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to: - reinforce their skills of interpreting real life problems by the mathematic constraints and variables. How to solve optimization problems? Cycle Level: Secondary 5 - answer 90% of the optimization problems from their worksheet. Group Size & Materials: Smart board, Calculator, Math Help Services, Worksheets from skill builder Subject competency: D2b), 3b), 4b), 6 E1,2 Cross curricular competencies: Competencies 1,2,5,8 Time Lesson 11:46-11:50 Introduction: Last week, students have been introduced the method to work out optimization problems (real life problems solved by polygon of constrains) and started practicing on optimization problems. Today, students will have more practice on optimization problems to reinforce their skills of solving this kind of problems. 11:50-12:05 Review: Check answers of homework from last week with the class. (Question 9 and 10 from worksheet level I). Remind students the steps for solving optimization problems. Steps for solving optimization problems Step 1: Identify the variables. Step 2: Translate words into inequalities and find the function rule. Step 3: Draw the polygon of constraints. Step 4: Find the vertices. Step 5: Input the values of each vertex into the equation and choose the best answer. Review and reinforcement activity: Will the winner loose? 12:05-12:35 Arrange students to get into groups of four. The teacher will pose one question at a time and set the timer for the question. If the group of students answers correctly within the time limit, they can draw a scoring card from the box or choose to abandon the chance. The score on the card determines the score the group should get. The scoring card could carry a negative message (ex: deduce 10 points), so answering a question correctly is no guarantee that a team will earn points; as a matter of fact, the team could lose points! That's why the game is called "Will the Winners Lose?" Homework: Ask students to finish the worksheet before the next class meeting. Assessment: Students will be informally assessed throughout the lesson by asking them what to do next when solving problems on the smart board. Observe students’ performance on the practice questions. REFLEC Did I meet my objectives? • What feedback did I receive from students (whether through TION: verbalizations or indirect nonverbal communication)? • How might I change this (on lesson) direct lesson in the future?
